serene56: So what's the solution To tell people to shove off and go back to where they came from

I know illegal entry into countries isn't the answer but what is?
Well, why have a solution? Just forget border protection and let them all come here. Why waste billions on detention we settle them here in the end anyway.

daggyone: Don't you have any sympathy for the grieving families who lost their loved ones???
90 people just lost their lives + more this morning trying to get what we take for granted - freedom, peace etc...In the words of Stevie Wonder - There are people dying
And its time to lend a hand to life
The greatest gift of all

I HAVE SYMPATHY FOR ANYTHING SUFFERING...be it human or animal...

But Daggy its THEIR CHOICE....and they choose to risk it. There are legal ways for them to gain entry...so its there choice to try and break our laws. What about the genuine people who are using the right channels to come here..they are pushed back further and further on the waiting list..is it fair on them ????
These boat people arnt the only ones dying on this earth and my heart bleeds for them but Im also realistic enough to know Australia cant help all of them. They Keep coming because they know we will take them so maybe the kindest thing is to say NO MORE and mean it. Daggy if you or anyone has a solution Id love to hear it.

Is watching it going to change anything?...

will I stop feeling sorry for them which I do...

will I find a solution that will fix it all.

one solution maybe....

all the people who want to help these people...will you take in 10 of them..into your home..not knowing who they are or what their back ground is...and feed them and look after them. Provide all the medical care and expenses...clothe them for how ever long it takes to have them established in this country?

The whole refugee situation is complex and I think like a lot of people right now we are heartily sick of the pollies arguing, disagreeing over it - JUST DO SOMETHING AND AGREE ON IT!!

Just like to point out that there is a big difference between illegal immigrants and asylum seekers and refugees??

Asylum seekers and refugees are people who have left their home country in fear for their lives either from religious persecution, politics etc. They are not 'queue jumpers' as there is no orderly queue if your village is being bombed and you don't have a passport??

Australia has signed up to offer a place of refuge to people in these life or death situations?? Until they have been 'processed' they are not 'illegal'. teddybear teddybear teddybear

Newbie, I think you might be missing the point. A lot are coming here because it is "The Land of Opportunity". Free medical, free housing, free money.

We have a lot of 'empty land' out there. But it does take a lot to survive in those places.

We have become a nation of 'supporting' in many areas and, of as Sunday, we all will be struggling when the Carbon Tax really hits. We have one of the best social support systems in the world for those of us that cannot manage on what we receive. But when so many more established businesses hit the wall, how can we sustain our economy?

My family has many emigrants in it and all have contributed to our ongoing welfare. It is those that have nothing to offer for 'our future' that I have a problem with. If they want to be here to be part of Australia and its future, come along and do your bit.

So in effect you're saying do nothing like what Abbott is doing, opposing every offer, every time that Labor or an independant brokers a deal, squash it and leave people to die on the seas?
I can't believe Abbott would oppose the Malaysian deal mixed up with their Naru deal????confused

Ummmmmmmm. Abbott deal/Howard deal? Not sure I see much difference when the Howard deal actually looked at letting the genuine "refugees" get here. Abbott seems to want to go back to what was really working.

Daggy, how long before your wife gets her permanent status under the present system?

Daggy, I am offering you a "good" deal. I will give you $2.50 for your bookshop. Lock, stock and barrel.thumbs up That is the deal that I am willing to broker.thumbs up Sounds good to me.thumbs up I will make sure that the contract has plenty of ribbons and tassles attached. It will look very good (does from my pint of view), lots of tinselthumbs up If you don't take this wonderful clourful tinselated offer, it will mean that you do not care for people and you will let them suffer from Kindle-Syndrome forever.

Come on Daggy, you know how much these book-lovers want to read real books. Kindle has only a short lifetime and needs to have the batteries recharged while real books are for life. My offer is for those booklovers to be able to enjoy a real life and if you knock it back, it means you do not care for the main things in life for so many people.

Nauru sort to join the federation of the commonwealth of australia, which the constitution states is a right of all pacific nations including nz. john howard placing himself above our constitution refused, which of course he could not do, so abbott solution is to bring the to the australian state of nauru....

The debate is a clear demonstration in my opinion why party politics should be banned.
Be good idea that politicians must first come to the people by holding a referendum (like the swiss do) before enacting any legislation.

They welcome boat people, advise them of the process they will need to under go on arrival and explain the conditions that could expect to find on arrival including the sort of food they would have available while awaiting the out come of there application.
E.g
breakfast: scrambled bacon and eggs, or pork dumplings
Lunch: pork fried rice
Dinner: roast pork, mixed veg and pork, bread and butter pudding

But Rob, these people are coming over here without permission, therefore, the terms and conditions that are set down, they don't care about - all they care about is fleeing their country for whatever reason they feel is valid and coming here... Overseas we are considered a joke - it appears to some countries, that Australia is a doormat - simply because no one really wants to make the hard decisions.... can't understand why, they always make hard decisions when it involves more money ... dunno
However, I do agree with your concept, let the Australians do the voting using the referendum system... after all they did with the Australian National Anthem... sigh sigh

In response to: Dont we sell Christmas Island to the highest bidder ? I mean its 2600 ks away from perth .At least then people wont risk their lives in leaky un seaworthy boats trying to get asylem !!

The word is asylum and the boats are unseaworthy.
What we are witnessing is an unarmed invasion of Australia by the Third World. Australia has shown itself to be too stupid and gutless to deal with it.
All so-called asylum seekers should be returned to their point of origin immediately and banned forever from Australia.
Australia should also return to the white Australia policy and begin the humane orderly repatriation of all immigrants (and their descendants) of non-European origin, beginning with all Muslims and Africans.
Unless this is done, Australia will descend into a multiracial and miscegenated hell from which it will never emerge. Allowing in racial groups that have a much lower average intelligence and different religion (Islam) can end only in poverty, misery, chaos and bloodshed.

That's a bit harsh!!!

I don't know the statistics, and frankly I don't care, but I do think that judging a whole race on a handful of individuals is not right....
I think some cultures we could learn a lot - particularly family values that seem to be decaying under the present system -

In a hundred years we have come along way, some of our choices are not great and others have been great... I guess working in a multicultured environment - my eyes are being opened to their beliefs and core values...and frankly as a "white race" they have a lot to offer it we open our ears, eyes, and shut our mouths...

There are circumstances when people cannot utilize whats often expressed as normal channels, for example a person can't go to the Taliban to obtain an exist visa, nor to the likes of Assad or even the expect the Australian embassy to process applications for migration through a fair and just process because the legislation contains religions bias put into the legislation by people like howard and abbot

If people are generally trying to escape persecution and are happy to fit into the type of life style Australians are accustom to then doesn't matter what ethical they come from, but if they come here with an intention to expand Islam for example then why shouldn't Australians the life style Australians are accustom to including supporting our pig farmers
