I guess it all depends on the nationality and the ability to get visas and visit each other. My brother dated a girl from Germany - they would meet every four months at mid-points - usually the US; once or twice in his country and her country until they finally got together full-time.

as much as I wish it was not, I have to say that it is very challenging. I think with the right situation and especially if one is truly ready and willing to move and the other ready and willing to be very much a committed and patient supportive individual that it has the odds against it. Just the same I know couples that have jumped in and found themselves in so much happiness you would not know that they had ever been apart. I am happy for those people, even the ones that did not work out for me I am happy for. It is nice to see others happy. It is nice when they do it and can still be civil to the ones that they were simply practicing with. ;-}

Sometimes it is the long distance that keeps the relationship alive. I have been in several long distance relationships and they worked well for me.

LDR requires communication, commitment, truth and trust. clearly defined roles within the relationship are useful.
i think placing an emphasis or focus on 'being together' and plans that support this, ..rather than on the distance also helps.
all relationships will experience different challenges, whether local or long distance...time and distance only have the importance you place on them.

norgeborg: My personal opinion that it is possible for some time, but if people don't start to live in the same city, it will collapse. And if we include cheating during that period, how long is it possible to be dedicated?
I've got very mixed feelings about LDRs , you either are very fortunate and have the pieces fall together to allow you both to be with each other or it's a slow boat to nowhere

Internet relationships are not real until you meet the person. Too many horror stories there to count. People can be anything on the Internet and who's going to prove them wrong?
