I would say that you got lucky with a "filter" you didn't even have to look for or discover, even later. I can top, or almost top your experience: A woman had accepted a dinner date with me, knowing full well there was an interest. She did nothing to contradict that--until right in the middle of dinner. I had brought flowers, which she seemed to love, and the place was popular and somewhat dressy. She knew what she was doing--but chose during the entrée to let me know she was seriously seeing another man. (I wish she HAD cancelled, and yes, I believe she owed me that info up front, not at a dinner that was obviously supposed to be a first romantic date. Pretty rotten. )But its indeed a matter of manners, not age. He clearly wasn't bothered.
