mollybaby: I am a bit dogged (or stupid) about stuff like that. I keep going.

Maybe I thought she would actually learn to write as she was going along

But my main reason was, there is no better cure for insomnia than reading that book

Oh well then. And presumably the chance even of interesting dreams.

I adore books, and read constantly, any and everything, here in China it's very hard to get books in English, so I don't have the luxury of choice. When travelling to the UK or the Philippines I buy loads from the duty free shop in Hong Kong and get them sent to my home. (I know the store owner which helps).

Trying to get the Chinese to read is an uphill struggle, as they all think the film version is better, But I did manage to get a class of 4th years to read the first Harry Potter Book (In Chinese) and since then one or two have continued with the series as they agree that while the films are great, the books are better.

This coming weekend I have to go to Shanghai, and will make sure I get to the big book shop there and stock up again. grin

Know what that is like...fortunately when traveling to south east Asia...Thailand had used English written novels in shops...a month without some reading material would have drove me mad...my latest novel is my favorite American author John Irving...just going to read it...I am hoping it will be as good as his others...mind you Tom Robbins is a good writer...a walk on the wild side...wine

popcorn

I was telling my daughter that I was wanting to read what happened in the aftermath of the 1929 depression. While running errands that afternoon I stopped at the thrift store looking for hardware stuff for a project and always look at the used books. As has happened before, but still surprised to find The United States And The Twentieth Century, copyright 1958 for 25 cents. Fascinating reading, I'm up to Chapter 17 The Politics Of Prosperity (1921-1929)

4. Where's Waldo - The Braille Edition

I had to google Where is Waldo in Braille, interesting!

" Either they type up random names, combination of letters, and gibberish, and you have to find the literal word "Waldo", else they draw out the characters with raised outlines and Waldo's outline is distinctive from the others.

wow

My children loved the "Where is Waldo" books when they were little and they were in english laugh

I was landed with the Trilogy by STIEG LARSSON and i must say it is better than all expectations.

I am nearly finished The girl with the Dragon Tattoo, for sure I will go on and read the other two. I just love the style of writing.

''Three Cups of Tea''
by Greg Mortenson & David Oliver Relin

This book really moved me when I read it 8/9 years ago and came across it again in my Mum's, I must have loaned it to her.

Man tries to climb K2 and failed. Was rescued by people in a local village in Pakistan. He was so moved by them he promised to return and build a school.
55 schools later he is still going. Fantastic story.

I'm an avid reader and normally flit between fiction / not fiction as well depending on my mood.

Great Thread.

The films are pretty good as well, The Swedish one's. I wasn't that impressed with the one with whatsitsnamelittlejamesbondfella.

McCarthys bar...rereading it as its the funniest book I`ve read. Pete mcCarthy, the author, from Warrington, had an Irish mother & felt he was more Irish than English. He did a tour of Ireland, his motto being "never pass a pub with your name on it". He really put his finger on the carry on in rural areas of Ireland & banter in pubs where he loved his Guinness. Brilliant read. Unfortunately he died at 51, from liver cancer I think. He knocked Frank mcCourt off the number one spot (Angela`s Ashes...where it always rains in Limerick apparently!)

Eliphas Levi, Dogma and ritual of High Magic, from 1854 (I found it in the inheritance of my grandpa once)

And Augustus, Res gestae divi Augusti

And The adventures of Tintin, The secret of the Unicorn laugh (When I was a child we had not a car, and my dad drove with me with a bus once a month on a Sunday morning to the central railway station and bought one Tintin or Asterix and Obelix book. I still love to read them all)
