What I was taught regarding the use of English many years ago when I did my exams was that in actual use the average is 4.79 letters per word (5) for non academics-and approximately 80% are between 2 and 7 letters long:

The dictionary states the distribution for distinct words counting each word only once regardless of how many times it is mentioned, the average is
7 to 8 letters - where 80% are between 4 and 10 letters long:

I do hope this assists with presenting some positive facts to an arguably more interesting discussion rather than speculative ramblings off topic.

mollybaby: You are talking about a quantifiable average there, Yubba.

That, I totally understand.

But as I said, on a dating site such as this, does giving an option of 'average' even mean anything, as average differs according to perception.

Well, same thing, we all have an idea of average as in size, height, weight, person and the word is used in a general sense so that all people can use the site in a description of themselves as an example, some will misinterpret that because they are the ones not understanding the word and its meaning, so someone saying they are average build may well be 10 kilos heavier or lighter. Too the majority of us l think its a good word to use or we need use a word of definition that may be difficult to come by.

So, it is a matter of interpretation/perception.

Yes, that is my thought, l can find no other explanation if you were describing yourself you may say "oh l am average build" however the other person may think you are bigger or smaller, it is 'perception', as it would be if you were given something in your hand and you thought it was different when the giver was holding it. By telling someone over the phone "I am 65 kilos" unless that person is good with body mass then they may think you are the size of a Lion, when you are in fact the size of a Leopard.

Don't quote me on this...

Maybe a person female/male who is belimik or anorexic who always sees themselves as fat or overweight would rather be told that they were average rather than fat, skinny or near to a skeleton etc... being told average might settle them for a while.

Better than them hearing that they are too skinny or too fat.

Def not being disrespectful just my thoughts.

Approximating a statistical norm, determining an average or expected value even if lacking special distinctions, like rank, or status is commonly encountered or lacking an exceptional quality of understanding or ability around the middle of a scale of evaluation or relating to or constituting the most frequent value in any distribution or constituting of a middle value or ordered set of values, or the average of the middle of two in a set of even numbers or values or average height for age or a average person in a street that somehow indicates normality but with connotations of mediocrity perhaps even an ordinariness as a direct consequence of being an average in not outstanding any middle value of an ordered set of values extending toward the middle therefore bringing us to a happy medium in a scale of evaluation to determine a reference for an expression that we are on average up the creek without a paddle

Unfortunately, people with bulimia or anorexia won't believe anything they are told.
They do not believe the weighing scales, the mirror either.
They see themselves totally different to the actuality.
So 'average' would mean absolutely nothing to them.

There are many types of average- median, mode, mean, etc etc. Microsoft excel has a dozen or so different kinds of average, a dedicated statistics software package a lot more.

I think most folks say average, when they really mean ordinary.

Hi Reb hug

Yes, that was mentioned by somebody else

If we did that, and thought of them as being normal, then we are screwed (and not in the good sense! grin )
