Communicating with one another. Sometimes you may say or do something to the other and not realize that you have done it till they point it out and tell you how it made them feel. That goes both ways.
Then, you or the other has to care.

It seem that every time a chat thread opens, people share their past experiences, often explicitly , to the point of getting a ban.... Freedom of speech has become a thing of the past & many fragile members take offence to certain comments posted..
Basically , it's like living in Russia .

That's right Molly .. And lots tell lies instead of just being honest about everything. Then they make a mistake and it comes out, so then comes the can I trust them?? That's a hard thing when it's in real life and, even harder when it's just by mail and you've not even met them. It's best to be you, floors and warts. Just be honest from the start, we all have them

There is even something worse than not talking: never giving a woman flowers.
I know two women who almost killed me when they told me, and I said that was a lie because there must have been flowers at the wedding. Sad to say, those two women are now divorced.

That's why I think LDRs are not a good idea.
You need to have met and to know a person to have a real relationship with them.
None of us are perfect, but we can at least try to be honest, and do the best we can

well a lot that's interesting has been said and of course communication is important. At the end of the day though communicating and understanding is not always enough without agreement at some level (depending on the importance).
I have understood the other person's side, but remained unwilling to agree or to accept it as something I could live with, same with forgiveness......so I think agreement and compatibility are also important
