a) Treat them as if they are 'broken' by being 'over the top' careful and treating them with kid gloves etc?
or
b) Treat them as you treat everyone else, include them in the gags and tomfoolery etc, and pay attention to their sensitivities / coping skills (and then as I hope do with any one else) avoid treading on their corns !

We all have some difficulties in life....but homeless and hungry or out of mind... surely have significantly more dificulties to survive. Showing compassion to donate $ for people who are worst than us, for people who sleeps under the bridge in cold and rainy winter days, it would make difference...

At first I approach carefully ,with respect ,then a few jokes ,till they loosen up and relax ,
You have to judge each case on its merits. If you can't take a joke that is my problem imo, I'll be quiet if it means he/she won't spend the rest of the day/week/month/year worrying about what's just been said.
