I used a TomCat plastic spring loaded trap to catch 2 rats. I just put peanut butter inside the clamp like trap and be very careful not to set off the trap with your fingers because the warnings says it is powerful enough to break bones in your fingers. Those 2 rats were huge. Never had any problems with rats since then. I still have the trap but there is no peanut butter in it anymore of course. The place where you put the peanut butter is a small round peace you screw into the bottom of the trap before you set it to prevent any accidents. Before that I tried sticky traps and they did not work.

Tulefell: I have a little platform / deck at my back door and now a rat made its home under it. I wouldn't mind if it lived somewhere in forrest, but I do not want it as a close neighbour. A method that kills it quick and painlessly would be the best solution.
Before someone recommends poison: we have hedgehogs here and neighbours let their cats out. I don't want to cause any collateral damage.

Bought cayenpepper and sprinkled between boards over the place I think it has its nest. Saw it run out. Dunno though, whether it was annoyed by pepper or the activity above its head in general or that was just a co-incidence.
