Mix breed don't perform well, but pure race will cost you a lot of money because of their healthproblems, and if you are a friend for animals you don't want a pet with healthproblems.
All you care about is a good protector, why not take a mixture of a Danish dog and a Dobermann for instance? I bet they will do they job.
Of course the bigger the dog, the more he eats, also extra costs.
