A guy joins the site, starts searching, interacting on forums, what-have-you...he comes across a lady who captures his attention, for a variety of reasons...he chats a bit with her, but in the back of his mind, he knows that because she was attractive to him, he knows it also means that she's more than likely attractive to a thousand other guys who are also vying for her attention.
How's his confidence level? How does he compete in that very full field? What does he need to do to stand out from the crowd and draw her attention?
Naturally, this works the other way around as well, it's just an example.

Not necessary. Since beauty is in the eye of the beholder (not only physical but also inner beauty)...what's attractive to one maybe repulsive to someone else? Example:

Im with kersey...either the person likes you for you or they don't....they may or they may not...everybody's preferences are different but doing things to stand out that wouldn't normally be you is a bit misleading because you're still you and when those things start to drop off he/she will notice the difference and wonder whats up....its far easier to discuss with someone than assume....maybe if they're someone who likes to talk to a lot of people while you're getting to know them they aren't in your compatibility range....its up to you to decide to keep talking or not and maybe things go further and maybe they don't....but discuss it at least....
