ever stop to think and realise that 'had it not been for those in history none of us ( and them ) would actually be here today?

Easy to look at global events ... but none of us would exist were it not for our forebears, and that continues through into the future and our own progeny.

Probably too deep for here ...

Totally agree Hex. You have to have lived and survived some of the disasters of the past to appreciate your future. Unfortunately some people cannot see further than the end of the nose especially some of the youth of today.handshake

rizlared: Without them, we would not be here today,
Without them, we would not be where we are today with science and technology.
Britain has a terrible history regarding the manufacture of Cloth, leather, steel and the mining for copper and coal etc. But we have learnt that treating workers as third-class citizens is a bad method. It is still happening, I am aware of that, especially in agriculture, but it will change, if we understand, learn and VALUE our history.
It will never change if we pretend it never happened.

Sentient beings (that have mind and fear death) of course have unquestionably been migrating from life to life since beginningless time. If we believe academic scholars earth had life 3.5 billion years ago, the worlds oldest known fossil ever found is apparently a set of Australian fossils.

Of course i stopped to think on the subject, and I certainly don't know why people fetter-away there short human experience and claim knowledge about the subject without even checking up? !! crying

History is written by the victors.

We hear/read this phrase all the time, but is it really true? Doesn't everyone, including the "losers", write history? Has all the history written by the losing sides in the past been completely purged, leaving us with a one-sided retelling retelling of history? It seems that everyone writes history, but it's the winners who interpret it years later and mold a new retelling of what happened. I'm sure there have been civilizations whose writings and texts were destroyed along with many other traces of their existence, but could you really justify the claim that events as recent as the world wars were documented and retold solely by the winners? Would love to know any thoughts and opinions, this phrase has always bothered me.

There's a lot more going on right now and children need to spend more time with their dad. Really boring and really exciting in a lectures and theme parks way with less iPhone in the middle. More Dads that leave an impression is what you need if you want to see history as a source of strength, to have an unusual knowledge about it from an early age.

Most recent history has a true record, made from diaries and letters, historians, all who were involved or living at that time in history.
These records are available to the general public, but some have been misquoted, quoted out of context or completely ignored by those who want to push another agenda. So best to read the original.

Most kids have little to no interest in history, unless it is a bedtime story told by their grandparents. And then it is a story, much like Alice in Wonderland, so not important. University is usually the time when history starts to make sense and becomes interesting.

It is best to read primary sources for any time in history. However, laziness and stupidity has made that practice "anachronistic." It's much easier to click a few times or listen to the giant intellects in the media.

Yes indeed, although the primary sources are easily available with just a little patience and research. Sadly most are not taught how to carry out legitimate research, so "Google" gets hammered instead.

Patience? Most people these days have an attention span that can be measured in nanoseconds. Their minds are overwhelmed with the next hour's news cycle.

Lol, yes very true, most would commit suicide if someone took their phone away so they couldn't play mind-numbing "games".

Again, the question is who has written that source. (Save for in how many languages you can read.)

Was looking for definition and found it today (in the Guardian): selective myth.

Of course the author must be scrutinized for personal bias, agenda, and accuracy of details.

Putting it into perspective, if you and four of your friends witnessed an accident today, how many different versions of the event will there be? Five of course and that happened today witnessed by people who likely had no agenda or personal connection to the event.
