Actually this is a complex question. The virus itself is a mutation in a flu population that likes the large and crowded population in China. Been that way for centuries. Most of the problems resultant from it this year started with a Brit academic name Neil Ferguson at Imperial College that WHO took seriously. The media picked it up. The rest is not yet quite history. How many died from being unable to get treatment at hospitals being swamped by people with fevers? True, the cosmetic surgery could be skipped (maybe should be) but procedures related to chemo were also blocked. And people simply didn't go to the hospital with most things that might otherwise have taken them there and saved their lives.

The virus itself is not a mutation in a natural flu population and has nothing to do with the size of any population. There's already enough evidence that COVID19 is a manufactured infection from the Wuhan labs and that the Who, Tedros, Xi, and communists lied and allowed it to spread. If you believe this came from one bat in a wet market you have no intelligence to reason with logic.

I do not know what caused this virus or any other virus before now and I'm certainly not going to speculate but one thing that stood out and stuck in my psyche was when a medical specialist I visited recently remarked " nature must take it's course " Is this not just perhaps natures way of '" doing things ? "'
