pedro27: civilation evolved in many parts of the world and for the better I must add
Mongo wonders what was civilized about giving Indians blankets with smallpox. Mongo also wonders what was civilized about killing 50 million buffalo just so native people would starve and die. Mongo has native friends. They also wonder many things.
pedro27: Well the history books were wrote and written maybe 3000 pages full, so on that note your 5 sentences can't do it justice across the board. It is more complexed than your post in fairness
IMO sometimes things work out for the ''better''
May be you only read books written by the white people Pedro. May be to get the full story you should read as many books written by Native Americans ...

Mongo has heard things about Sands Creek and Wounded Knee. Maybe Pedro can read about them!
The Native Americans were often referred to as savages by those who terrorised them.
But who were the real savages?
"The 20 Native American Codes Of Ethics
1. Pray every day. You can pray alone, in a group, and whenever you want. The great spirit only hears you if you speak.
2. Don't judge those who've lost their way. You'll encounter people who have fallen off the path. Pray that they will find guidance back to a good life.
3. Find yourself. No one else can make your path for you, though some may try. And remember, no one can walk your path for you.
4. Treat your guests with utmost respect. Serve your guests the best and treat them with respect.
5. Do not take what is not yours. It is not yours. It was not earned nor was it given.
6. Respect all things. Be it animal, plant, fungus, person, or place; treat everything with respect.
7. Honor other people’s thoughts, wishes and words. Don't mock or interrupt. Respect the expressions and experiences of others.
8. Don't speak poorly of others. This puts negative energy into the universe. Eventually it returns to you.
9. Everyone makes mistakes. All mistakes may be forgiven.
10. Bad thoughts cause illness. So practice positive thoughts and mindfulness.
11. Nature isn't here for us exclusively. We are a part of the web of life. Not in control of it.
12. . Children are the future. Treat them with respect. Raise them to be good humans. Give them space to grow.
13. Don't try to break hearts. All pain intentionally delivered will be delivered back to you.
14. Tell the truth. The truth sets us free.
15. Be balanced. Ensure your mental, spiritual, physical, and emotional self are all cared for and balanced.
16. Make conscious decisions about your life. You're responsible for your own actions.
17. . Respect the personal space of others. Remember, you're a guest in the personal space of others. Don't mess with their things.
18. Be true to yourself. You can't nurture and help others if you aren't being true to yourself first.
19. Respect the beliefs of others. Don't force your beliefs down the throats of others.
20. Share with others. It feels good to be charitable."

Just because I know a lot about the history of indians I often feel ashamed I'm a white man. I would love to live with the indians, and maybe help them getting a better life.

p.s.: there are a lot of good movies about indians, movies where soldiers are ordered to shoot women and children, and some refused, where you can see how the army surrounded the indian camp at night and then early in the morning started shooting with their gatling guns. There are several on this movie on youtube, free to watch

Selenite: "Having a better idea for the land" as you describe it doesn't give anyone the right to go and steal someone else's land or home ...
Imagine you have a home Pedro, and someone decides they have a "better idea for it" than the way you live in it, does that someone have the right to come and through you out or kill you so they can have it "for their idea on how to live"?

Dutch people where everywhere in the USA and South America. New York used to be called New Amsterdam, but the dutch people traded it, and we got Surinam. And if I see how the Indians still are treated like 2nd hand civilians in their own country and nobody seems to stand up for their rights, it makes me think. Would love to see an Indian become the next POTUS.
And as long as their are cows, their will be cowboys. Allthough farming is getting more modern, there always will be people working with cows. But somehow, in later years the term cowboy was given to anybody wearing a cowboyhat, and there are still a lot american people wearing these hats. Think about tv-series like Dallas and Dynasty.
Cowboys lived long time ago and might not even be from your country (not even your remote ancestors).
I don't accept the concept of "collective guilt".
Mongo not know about collective guilt but Mongo does understand PeKaatje. Mongo lived with native Americans on a reservation. Whatever happened to them is not in the past. Mongo knows they live today with the actions of white men who made and broke over 350 treaties with different tribes. Mongo felt ashamed he could not do more when he lived among them.
Mongo thinks there is some confusion. Cowboys and Indians fought but most of the really terrible things done to native Americans were done by the American government and the military. Mongo thinks the government hired cowboys to do some of the bad work and sometimes the cowboys were trying to protect settlers and the land that was stolen from the different tribes. Mongo knows there were bad cowboys and bad natives but all people have good and bad.
Mongo lived very close to the Little Bighorn battlefield. Mongo knows it was soldiers and not cowboys that were trying to kill the natives.
