But to me

I am very fond of birds, but to me,
the dawn chorus is a euphemism
for a loud cacophony of tweeting,
regardless of what species they might be.

I like art when it is skilful, but to me,
the Mona Lisa is a picture of
a woman who just sits there looking smug,
and holds but not a trace of mystery.

I love music when it’s good, but to me,
Imagine is as corny as can be.
The whiteness of John Lennon and that room
lend it absolutely no profundity.

It’s not that I am soulless, but to me,
it seems we see what we are told to see.

I agree with you Harbal on EVERY point you make, its as if we are made to be mindless souls and have to follow what we are told or the crowd.
I am not like that either, you make a very salient point.
I cannot avoid the birds but the La Giaconda is crap, give me a good Renoir any day and Imagine is sentimental crap for a man who had lost the plot, but he had his day.

laugh laugh you took the words right out my mouth thumbs up another very good one

I do so like to be agreed with, thanks, rob and EX. handshake

I don't dislike the dawn chorus, as I said, I like birds and I love nature; it's just that I don't see it as being any more than a mass chirping session.

I very much appreciate the skill of Leonardo, but I can't help but find the subject of that painting a bit mundane.

As for John Lennon: Yes, the Beatles were something special, I'll give him that.

Nice to see you back here Herbie. hug

Unlike you...I see depth and meaning in everything.
Everything has a purpose and I also question everything.
Harbal
Hi, daniela. wave

As long as you come to your own conclusions about what you are looking at, rather than just seeing what you are "supposed" to see.
daniela777
Herbie...everything we see..hear..feel etc...is all a matter of perception.

I like to hear the singing of birds first thing and..in order to get that ..I put some food out for them.
So they just remind me that it's time to feed them. smile
Harbal
I like to hear birds singing too, daniela, and my appreciation of it doesn't seem to be diminished by me not regarding it as more than just birds singing.

I like to hear birds SINGING too but the chatter at 5 am in the morning - well....It's a matter if your a morning person or not and whether maybe somebody has a hangover or not. As for Mona Lisa - to me there are far more beautiful women who have been painted. I prefer DaVinci's Last Supper over her. There is plenty of controversy over that. Such as to which disciple is which and if one of them is a woman or not (DaVinci Code, etc.). As for music - it depends on what your ear wants to hear - I prefer all kinds of different music. However, I do not like Heavy Metal, old old country. I like more Kenny Rogers, Reba, Dolly, John Denver. No classical except for a stray few. As well as individual minds and bodies - I guess God gave us individual ears. Thanks for sharing Harbal.

Hello, Kathy.

I think what you are talking about is taste, whereas I am thinking more of the sacred cows that somehow get into our collective consciousness and we acknowledge without question. You don't have to like something in order to accept that it has got some kind of special merit. I just think that we can all too readily assent to things because we assume -often mistakenly- that they have authority behind them.

"Sacred cows that get into our collective consciousness" ..woooh..wow

Now he's talking! applause

My mistake again as usual
Harbal
Don't say that, Kathy, my failure to get my meaning across properly is not your mistake.

Ever noticed how kids before they start school have no problem inventing their own words when they want to talk about something beyond their vocabulary. And then, too bad, they are told what to like and how to talk - to me this is what you poem is about Harbal, a fun read!
Harbal
I think the ideas that are put into our heads as kids are very hard to get rid of, Yaspark; although we seem to be capable of accepting things all our lives, if we don't question them. Thanks for your comment. wine

I like this very much. I think it is wonderful that some of us step back sometimes and give things a colour of our own, and think other than we are expected to think.wine

good write Harbal. I agree with almoust all points. It should be our own choice to like or dislike. You are only mistaking with Mona Lisa. cheering

Thank you so much, Ginger. wine
Harbal
And what do you like about the Mona Lisa, salamuna?

I'm not criticising the quality of the painting or the skill that went into it; it is only the subject of it that I find a bit boring.

Hi Harbal. There is not a question of like or dislake Mona Lisa , not about her beauty In that case the main point is her smile. Leonardo was the first one who managed to depict emotion in painting. Before him, portraiture was cold and lifeless.. Sure in our times the smile of Mona Lisa is nothing special, but here the historical moment is very important . Hope you can understand what was my point. Greetings from Holland and thank once more for sharing your poemcheering

Yes, I understand, thank you for the explanation, salamuna. wine

Another resounding repudiation of senseless expectation disputes the authenticity of art? And beauty? The serene? Life is only a matter of perception makes good sense, I agree.

Very interesting, and I side with you in this: we are free to have our own opinion in any matter! Thank you for sharing!tip hat thumbs up
