Before the war

An embittered flag
endlessly flapping
from the battlefield
like tired water
disenchanted
let us remember the joyous
awaken to the light
this from your heart
as you remember
soft lined days
trees by a brook

Before the war
your blessed hands
carved in marble rhythm
such were Rodin days
sunlit splendor
for this jack of knives
can spill history
but here I wait
earnestly on the step
for your return
