mnowsa: i don't know about dog though, but if the lady has a good looking cat like me(a cat who can hold breath also), she should give up her relationship for me.
bestat45: i wonder if jeolousy is a health issue, (mental) that should be considered in answer to the origanal question by poster. i cannot understand how someone can be jealous of dogs in the other persons life. people do not have the exact same feelings for their dogs as they do for people, so attention given to one, should not take away from the other. it seems that this is difficult for the person not having the dogs to understand. again, i would have to say that the dogs would win out, especially if i had them prior to a relationship.
if already in a relationship, then the matter of obtaining a pet, would and should be discussed with the other person. totally different situation.
get real girl..I have more feelings for my dogs than I ever have a bloke...men come n go your dogs love you for life...and they don't care if youve got no make up on or are in a snotty mood.. lets hear it for our true friends!

The ancient soothsayers used to look for signs in odd things like entrails and snail dung. I prefer words.
And I think I spot an self-fulfilling prophecy in your words, Sols...

I'm wondering how any of the "pet-first" people here would feel if upon meeting a guy or gal he or she declared: "Honey, I ain't ever gonna love you as much as my dog."

good way to pose your question ambrose. tit for tat i suppose. if i ever decide i want to meet someone, and they happened to be "the one", i still would not get rid of my dogs as they are family. and they same would apply if i were a recipient of the same statement. it would just mean that it was not the right match.

kissmedeeply: Scratch ur head all you want..
There are many on here that will tell you that they are allergic to animals and its not in their head..
When one becomes so ill and cannot breathe and get hives and so on..its not in ur head
Actually we got Bodie from a family who's very young son was allergic to him. They were broken hearted when we they had to part, but at least he came to a good home.

But fortunately they can't see what you've made of him, G. What a long, long way for a poor hound to descend...
just sick of people thinking that allergies is just simple..
I hope they dont end up having severe allergies then biting their tongue later..
Love comes before anything else..
Nice to see you again
Allergies can take a terrible toll on the body - agreed, J. I've heard the claim that one can lose, say, an allergy to one's own cats, but I'm not entirely convinced of that. Allergies have a way of migrating - that is, assuming other forms.
Well, it depends, because if it is a serious relationship and the Lover may get a severe reaction that may require a stay in the hospital, yes of course I would give up the dog. However, in most cases it is just a matter of one not liking the fur or a mild allergy and antihistamines will help.
A dog will be faithful to its owner for ever, and a Lover, perhaps not.
If a person meets another with an animal that has been in the family for years, then, one has to except that the animal is part of their lives and asking to give it up is cruelty. If I met a man with dogs or cats, I would never expect that person to give it up.
This is just my opinion.

Some people love dogs and cats more than they respect or consider a person... I think that's a pretty sad, but true, statement on some peoples state of mind and it also reflects on the idea of how cheap a human life really is. For all the platitudes you hear and see about human life and war, some people love their pets more than anyone in the world... Sad, very sad.

the same could be said on the opposite side of the spectrum. many will either not go into, or give up on a relationship because the other has cats, or dogs. doesn't have to be about allergies, just likes and dislikes. some are just jealous because they do not want to have to share the attentiion. compromise is an option, but, for some it is "my way or the highway"
