Why do humans need explanations for the nature of creation and existence? Does it really help ease fear of mortality? Wouldn't there be deeper meanings at stake than that? Like the truth or simple exploration through science fueled by curiosity?

God is an imaginary friend made up by people to explain things they didn't or couldn't understand many many years ago. That some still need to believe in this imaginary friend to me is amazing, and not amazing in a wow wonderful way.
More in a holy crap they can't think for themselves kinda way. The whole god thing evolved from various belief systems prior to what is now considered the norm. Holy days stolen from paganism and earlier belief systems. God is simply man's way of explaining what we didn't understand, that some still hold on to this belief, beggers belief.
Religion and the idea of god in their own right are harmless, however add mankind to the equation, and ownership of this god by certain groups starts, followed by control of people and the weilding of power by others. God/ religion and nationality are, IMO, the two greatest curses bestowed upon mankind.
