First, I agree with Exred´s comment about worshipping deities. Worshipping someone, or something is giving our power away!
To quote Davenita´s comment: "I think religion gives people a false sense of security and of belonging. In reality, it imprisons people to follow a strict set of someone else's guidelines".
I agree with this as well!
"And anti-religions, such as atheism or agnosticism, is just as worthless because you're still imprisoning yourself to someone else's opinions".
Yes, also true! And often, other people´s ideas are long since dead.
Now, to the OP: Regarding "alternatives", is just swapping one religion for another Humanity seems to have a NEED to follow leaders - whether they are royalty, politicians, pop stars - any celebrity will do!
Myself, although brought up in a Catholic country (France), religions never appealed to me. That having been said, I have always been interested in Shamanism and have been trained in their healing techniques. Although Shamans do not follow any religion, they do have deities, such as the Sun the Moon, the Stars... and other tangible objects, and also perform rituals.
Since I am not into worshipping, following leaders and rituals, I didn´t follow those, apart from "honouring Mother Earth.
Now I have been living in Spain - another Catholic country - for 20 years and have observed that the younger generation, although they have still ties to their religion and religious beliefs, they are slowly becoming more open minded and realise that there are alternatives but... "alternatives" means they are still looking for a framework - at least most of them.
I agree with Jim here! Nobody is responsible for looking after us.
We're all responsible for our own actions!
As for those who hear voices ...it's all a matter of perception and beliefs. For those people the voices are real...and they will interpret them according to their own beliefs.
Same as those having "near death experiences" and seeing some super being...there again...they will see and hear what they want to see and hear.
For me...I see lights..energy...but no such angelic beings.
RE: Is there a place for Paganism, Witchcraft and Wicca in today's world.
