Hey Laura, there's a movie I'd like to take you to see, it's called "Zeitgeist". It will open your eyes to exactly how you have been manipulated and lied to from the time you were a toddler probably. Have you ever wondered why virtually all daycare centers in rural areas, like yours, are run by a church? It's because a childs mind is wide open to suggestion. Get em while they're young and you can plant anything you want in there. Add re-inforcement at home with religious parents and the fix is in. Don't give a child the chance to think for itself. By the time they are an adult they are totally indoctrinated and will pass down the "faith" to their children and the cycle repeats. I'm not criticizing you, you are just a victim of a scam. Of course you can't see it or even begin to question why you think the way you do because they did a really good job on you.
I agree. I'm from the hitting generation too. You didn't ever want to get my mother pissed off because you knew if she lost it you were gonna get hurt. I guess you can't just take one form of discipline away from parents without replacing it with another.
All too many parents subscribe to the punishment side of the equation without an equal measure of reward for doing good. The reward side is probably far more effective than punishment.
This was the situation with my son Danny who seemed to be always getting into trouble and all we did was give him time outs and sending him to his room with no TV etc. It wasn't working! We decided to try a totally different approach. I watched him go about his business for hours just waiting for the opportunity to reward him for anything. As soon as I did his face lit up and from that moment on he was a different kid. I guess I changed also.
This is a new show on TV. I watched it last night and while it may be aimed at young families esp with little kids I found it to be a really good show and I learned a lot from it. If you have kids and especially if they are little monsters you owe it to yourself to watch this show.
Michelle and I were heartbroken to learn this morning of the death of our dear friend, Senator Ted Kennedy.
For nearly five decades, virtually every major piece of legislation to advance the civil rights, health and economic well-being of the American people bore his name and resulted from his efforts.
His ideas and ideals are stamped on scores of laws and reflected in millions of lives -- in seniors who know new dignity; in families that know new opportunity; in children who know education's promise; and in all who can pursue their dream in an America that is more equal and more just, including me.
In the United States Senate, I can think of no one who engendered greater respect or affection from members of both sides of the aisle. His seriousness of purpose was perpetually matched by humility, warmth and good cheer. He battled passionately on the Senate floor for the causes that he held dear, and yet still maintained warm friendships across party lines. And that's one reason he became not only one of the greatest senators of our time, but one of the most accomplished Americans ever to serve our democracy.
I personally valued his wise counsel in the Senate, where, regardless of the swirl of events, he always had time for a new colleague. I cherished his confidence and momentous support in my race for the Presidency. And even as he waged a valiant struggle with a mortal illness, I've benefited as President from his encouragement and wisdom.
His fight gave us the opportunity we were denied when his brothers John and Robert were taken from us: the blessing of time to say thank you and goodbye. The outpouring of love, gratitude and fond memories to which we've all borne witness is a testament to the way this singular figure in American history touched so many lives.
For America, he was a defender of a dream. For his family, he was a guardian. Our hearts and prayers go out to them today -- to his wonderful wife, Vicki, his children Ted Jr., Patrick and Kara, his grandchildren and his extended family.
Today, our country mourns. We say goodbye to a friend and a true leader who challenged us all to live out our noblest values. And we give thanks for his memory, which inspires us still.
Do you have anything constructive to contribute to this thread instead of fear mongering? For people who hate government with such a passion you Republicans are trying awfully hard to be included IN it.
If you had to choose between medicare or nothing which would you choose? That is at the heart of the issue. To get 47 million people on a plan which may not be as perfect as what some executives have but at least it will keep them out of ER's and maybe provide them some preventive care.
My son was about to start a new very good job and he was having difficulty with a chronic caugh. He didn't want to be caughing all over the place on his first day so he went to the ER because he had no time to wait for an appt with my doctor. Take a guess what they charged him for the ER visit. FOURTEEN HUNDRED DOLLARS! I sh__ you not! It seems they hit him for all the no payers that walk in the door.
OH, one more thing, there is another thing that has driven up healthcare costs in this country. Hospitals! Where do they get the nerve to charge $1,000 a night for a goddamn bed? not to mention the other items they tack on your bill like $1.00 a pill for freakin asprin or 10 bucks for a plastic basin. It's outrageous! These charges originate with the Board of Directors of the hospital and they are all getting filthy rich on the scam and they don't even practice medicine. They are nothing more than a bunch of Bernie Madoffs.
We already have a govt administered health care system which just happens to work very well, it's called 'MEDICARE" DUH!
Wake up and smell the coffee. The problems with the healthcare system in this country are the insurance industry, litigation, corruption, and fraud. Add to that the problem of medical records on paper stored at multiple locations such as doctors offices, and hospitals and a broken communication network, which are not accessible to the individual. Why hasn't the medical industry joined the 21st century by computerizing medical records already?
Where I live I see so many retired people piloting $200,000 motorhomes with Cadillac Escalade SUV's being towed going up & down interstate 95 it's a goddamn sin. These people are not eating dog food and I have no doubt they get fat SSI checks every month along with their interest & dividends from their investments.
Oh yes! That is one of my all time favorite songs. I understand he weighed 600 lbs and the end of that clip was a celibration of his life and they cast his ashes into the sea by Hawaii. That song was used in a great movie called "50 first dates"
Dump this raging control freak and don't look back! Nobody should have to deal with a person like this. He needs you, he doesn't love you. This type of person is not capable of loving anyone. He probably learned this behavior from his parents. I would be willing to bet his father was physically and verbally abusive to his mother and she accepted it which is how he learned how to act. This type behavior is passed down from one generation to the next. Do you want your male children to become wife beaters?
First of all, I seriously doubt that if you paid into SSI in the form of FICA deductions there is NO WAY the gov can say because you live abroad we're not going to pay any benefits to you. That is fraud and theft in the strictest sense of the word.
Personally, I think it's a good idea in these times of severe recession that COLA increases be suspended. People on SSI have been getting by on what they've been getting and can do so for another year or two. In the event of additional money needed for meds, there are other programs available that can be tapped for that. Older people want to help out the economy just like everyone else and they often spend way less than they get from the gov. I know my mother did, she use to give me money all the times because she didn't need so much. I invested it for my sons college tuition. Not allowing them to do their part in helping the economy recover, makes them feel like part of the problem instead of part of the solution. Did you know there is no program which will allow a person on SSI to opt out of the COLA?
I have little doubt with the way the original formula for Social Security has evolved that one day it will have to end. when it does, those who were in it will be paid benefits based on what the individual paid into it and any shortfall will have to be handled privately such as with a 401K or IRA. At that point no new people will be enrolled and no more FICA deductions will be taken out of your paycheck.
Social Security will end for ever, a wonderful idea which was needed at a time when things were very desperate in America and the world.
O-Henry was known mostly for his short stories. "The gift of the Magi" where a couple deeply in love but poor as church mice want to get a nice Christmas gift for each other. He has a watch but no fob, she has beautiful hair halfway down her back. She sells her hair to buy him a watch fob and he sells his watch to buy her a comb. Very sad!
Another O-Henry story called "The Third Ingredient" takes place in a boarding house during the depression. Heddy Pepper just gets fired from a dept store and all she has is 15 cents and a slab of meat. She meets an artist living in the attic "studio" who happens to own 2 potatoes. Ah hah 2/3 of a stew if only they can find someone with an onion the "Third Ingredient". Everybody knows you can't make stew without onions! After much deliberation and lamenting about the pot of stew they could almost make, they hear a man crying in the hallway. It turns out he is crying because he has a "sty" in his eye and is using this big beautiful Bermuda onion to try to make his eye tear to wash out the sty. Needless to say the two ladies are now on a mission to relieve this man of his onion so they can finally make a stew and have something to eat.
RE: what would u like to thank God for?
