RE: Fuel prices

This thread is too important to just let expire so I thought I would give you all an update. I emailed Gas Buddy and this is the response I got.

"Sent: 11-13-2007To: feedback@gasbuddy.comSubject: VirginiaGasPrices.com feedback - ooby_dooby I have some friends in the UK and I sent them a link to your site and they fell in love with it. Is there any plans to expand gas buddy to other countries? They need it even more than we do with gasoline costing over $8.00 a gallon in some places.Thank you."

Hi Tom, Not currently, but I'd be lying if I said we hadn't considered it. Regards, GMGasBuddy Organization.

Well there it is, short & sweet. If one of you over the pond could create a website that deals with this you will get flooded with responses I assure you. Maybe you could even charge a few cents for membership who knows? If it gets big enough you could sell ad space, just look at eBay!

BTW one way to beat the high price of fuel is to buy stock in an oil co. When they win, you win, it's kind of a no brainer. I've made $1,000's on Valero stock. But before you get into that you better take a course in investing in stocks or you're gonna get burned real bad.

RE: Love Songs

RE: Poisoning their own well

I realize this is slightly OT but why don't you rent out those 2 bedrooms to a couple of cute college coeds? Maybe you could even teach them woodworking.cool

When they become wealthy successful business women they could pick your retirement home for you. Maybe even give you sponge baths now & then.........Nah, more likely they would hire a matronly Eastern European butch who would grab you by the tassle and lift your middle clear off the bed and slip a bedpan under your bottom when you had to do your foul business. rolling on the floor laughing

A Memo from Howard Dean

GOP Party IDs at Record Lows: Just one in three Americans identify themselves as Republican in the latest Pew Research Center poll, giving Democrats the widest advantage in voter identification in two decades. [Baltimore Sun, 11/4/07]
Republican Failures on Immigration, Economic Issues Fueling Fall: Despite frustration in many communities with President Bush's failure to address immigration reform and refusal to provide state and local communities the resources they need to enforce existing laws, Republican efforts to use immigration as a wedge issue failedonce again. GOP efforts to fan anti-immigration fears and play on growing economic insecurity and voter's anxiety over job security, stagnating wages, higher living costs, gas prices, and other facets of the George W. Bush "You're On Your Own" Economy failed in the face of strong Democratic candidates who offered real solutions on the critical issues.
Republicans Are Losing On The Issues: The Democratic Party now has double-digit leads over Republicans when voters are asked which party is "better able to manage the federal government," is "more honest and ethical," is "more concerned about people like me" (Democrats lead by 29 points), and is best able to bring about "needed change" (Democrats lead by 22 points). Even on security, Democrats and Republicans are viewed as "equally qualified to face down national security threats." [Pew Research Center for the People and the Press poll, November 2007]
Republican Morale is Plummeting: Only 36 percent of Republicans and Republican-leaning Independents say the GOP "does an excellent or good job" of "standing up for traditional GOP positions," a decline of 25 points since July 2004. [Pew Research Center for the People and the Press poll, November 2007]
Republicans Aren't Happy With Their Candidates: According to the latest Washington Post/ABC News poll, "Republicans continue to be less satisfied with their candidate options than Democrats are with theirs." [Washington Post, 11/5/07] For the first time since 1979, no Republican candidate has been able to gain the support of more than 40 percent of Republican voters in the November heading into an election year. Among white evangelical voters, 51 percent are dissatisfied with their choices and say they wish they had more options. [CBSNews.com, 10/18/07]
GOP Obstructionism Is Hurting Congressional Candidates: A recent SurveyUSA poll in seven states with vulnerable Republican Senate seats showed that Democrats are "leading or tied" in five of those races and trailing narrowly in another. [Roll Call, 11/5/07] This shows that the Republican Congressional strategy of obstructing Democratic efforts to fight for the priorities of America's working families is failing, and will cost them seats next year.
THE BOTTOM LINE
In short, while the Democratic Party is better organized, better motivated, and better positioned to make the case for change, the Republican Party is increasingly challenged by "Bush Fatigue," a damaged "brand," a shrinking and demoralized base, and a lack of enthusiasm for its candidates. If Democrats continue to show up everywhere, run on our values, and offer clear solutions on the critical issues, the clear lesson of 2007 is that Democrats are well-positioned to win anywhere in 2008.

A Memo from Howard Dean

Dear Thomas,
I had to show you this memo that went around headquarters last week after the big wins in Virginia.
THE POLITICAL LANDSCAPE
Yesterday's victories were the result of strong candidates running competitive races based on their values, but they also reflected the wider political landscape. Democrats are poised to take advantage of widespread dissatisfaction with President Bush's failed leadership, the increasing weakness of the Republican "brand," and the increasing strength of our Party. While the GOP is losing ground in its traditional strongholds and their base is shrinking, Republican efforts to use immigration as a wedge issue to distract from their failed leadership once again were unsuccessful.

Republicans Are Losing Ground in Traditional Strongholds: Democrats are expanding the political playing field and eroding the preference for Republicans in key so-called "red state" regions. Dixie, once the heart of the Republican electoral map, is in play again as Southern voters' preference for Republicans continues to wane and break Democratic. At the end of the summer of 2006, Republicans held a four point advantage over Democrats in the generic congressional horserace in the South. According to internal polling from earlier this month, Democrats now enjoy a five point advantage (46 to 41 percent) over the GOP in Southern states. Republican support also continues to erode in the Mountain and Plains states, where Democrats now hold an eight point advantage in the once solidly Republican Plains region. [brilliant corners Research, November 2007]
GOP Brand is Suffering: While a majority of Americans (51 percent) view the Democratic Party favorably, the percentage of Americans with a favorable view of the Republican Party has plummeted to 39 percent, down 12 points since March 2006. The GOP's unfavorable rating is up ten points to 56 percent in that same period. [Washington Post, 11/5/07]
Republican Base is Shrinking: Key elements of the GOP base, including "fiscal conservatives" and "business leaders" are drifting away from the Republican Party "because of the war in Iraq, the growing federal debt and a conservative social agenda they don't share." [Wall Street Journal, 10/2/07] Even white evangelical voters feel that Democrats, not Republicans, are paying more attention to their top issues--the war in Iraq and health care. Just 10 percent of white evangelical voters said Republicans are addressing their top issue, compared to 24 percent who said Democrats are. [CBSNews.com, 1/18/07] The number of young evangelicals (ages 18 - 29) who "steadfastly proclaimed themselves Republicans" dropped 15 points, from 55 percent in 2001 to 40 percent today. [Washington Times, 10/2/07]

RE: I need help

I feel this woman has met another man. You should go to her house and find out otherwise you will never have any peace. If I am right, it will hurt but in the long run you will heal faster and be able to move on easier.

So sorry. we've all been in your shoes and it really sucks.

RE: God...fact or fiction?

There is not one shred of evidence to support the existence of god or any supreme being. Not one. If all believers have is "faith" then they have nothing! Science and technology has given mankind everything, religeon has given mankind nothing but wars suffering and death.

RE: Fuel prices

Yes it makes a difference because the cheaper stations are always very busy and the expensive ones don't do a lot of business. That site I posted is awesome for the info they put out and it 100% voluntary. All the prices they post are supplied by people who report the prices they see as the drive to wherever they are going.
Ive seen people filling up at expensive stations and all I can come up with is they are either stupid, ignorant or filthy rich. Most likely stupid.confused

Another factor in the price of Diesel is the new low sulpher Diesel fuel is more costly to make or at least that's the theory.

RE: Fuel prices

Very interesting post Dougie. It might interest you to know that in the US there also exists dyed fuel for "off road" use ie farmers, however any vehicle that uses public roads (unless it is a farm vehicle) is commiting tax evasion if they are caught with dyed fuel in the tank and the fine is not cheap. As a trucker I am acutely aware of the price of Diesel, which here is more costly than gasoline which makes absolutely no sense.

There actually is a site which is exactly as you describe where motorists can report fuel prices here. This is the one for my state of Virginia.

I don't know if there's a site like this outside the US but if you contact them maybe one could be started, if there's enough interest.

RE: Fuel prices

Part of the problem with these very high fuel prices, at least for Americans, is that crude oil is priced in US Dollars. When the dollar declines, like is has recently, it takes more of them to buy a barrel of oil. The other factor driving up prices at the pump is a shrinking domestic oil inventory. Add to this a president who has refused to tap the S.O.R. (Strategic Oil Reserves) in the past and is unlikely to do it now and you dont have much hope for pump prices coming down anytime soon.

to be continued.

RE: Fuel prices

doh

RE: Bitter

I'm sitting here trying to think of superlatives and adjectives to use in praise of your poem but nothing I come up with seems adequate to describe the brilliance of what you have created. The only word that seems to fit is "masterpiece" but with one caveat. You should change this line " For I, like Tom Cruise in “A Few Good Men” just can’t handle the truth" Nobody will know who Tom Cruise is in 100 years and fewer still will have seen the movie, but your poem will still be read. This poem is like music. I has incredible metre and flow. the cynicism of ever finding true love is graphically depicted in a fatalistic surrender to hopelessness. The ending is on the money with "don’t tell me anything other than the things I want to hear.....and for God’s sake—sound sincere!

What a pleasure to read a well written poem!

RE: A Tear Drop Fell

Powerful, sad and familiar. Very thought provoking.
And a warning that neglect will lead to great loss.

IF TOMORROW NEVER COMES

Thank you. It's hard to read without getting a little teary eyed.

IF TOMORROW NEVER COMES

Anyone who's ever lost a loved one should be able to relate to this.

IF TOMORROW NEVER COMES

IF TOMORROW NEVER COMES

If I knew it would be the last time
that I'd see you fall asleep,
I would tuck you in more tightly
and pray the Lord, your soul to keep.

If I knew it would be the last time
that I see you walk out the door,
I would give you a hug and kiss
and call you back for one more.

If I knew it would be the last time
I'd hear your voice lifted up in praise,
I would video tape each action and word,
so I could play them back day after day.

If I knew it would be the last time,
I could spare an extra minute or two
to stop and say I love you,
instead of assuming you would KNOW I do.

If I knew it would be the last time
I would be there to share your day,
well I'm sure you'll have so many more,
so I can let just this one slip away.

For surely there's always tomorrow
to make up for an oversight,
and we always get a second chance
to make everything right.

There will always be another day
to say our I love you's,
And certainly there's another chance
to say our "Anything I can do's?"

But just in case I might be wrong,
and today is all I get,
I'd like to say how much I love you
and I hope we never forget,

Tomorrow is not promised to anyone,
young or old alike,
And today may be the last chance you get
to hold your loved one tight..

So if you're waiting for tomorrow,
why not do it today?
For if tomorrow never comes,
you'll surely regret the day,

That you didn't take that extra time
for a smile, a hug, or a kiss
and you were too busy to grant someone,
what turned out to be their one last wish.

So hold your loved ones close today,
whisper in their ear,
Tell them how much you love them
and that you'll always hold them dear,

Take time to say "I'm sorry, please forgive me,"
"thank you" or "it's okay".
And if tomorrow never comes,
you'll have no regrets about today.

RE: what was your very first job?

Delivery boy at a grocery store at 14. 50 cents a day plus tips and a sandwich.

It was really strange how I got this job. This was a store where they had burlap bags of spices set out on the sidewalk and I was in the process of stealing a handful of cloves to chew on so my mother believed I actually went to the dentist when in fact I didn't. Before I could make off with the cloves, the owner offered me a job. rolling on the floor laughing

Ps: I got some cloves for free.

RE: How do you decide what score you rate a photo?

I think this whole photo rating system is bogus for a number of reasons.

The rating criteria has never been formally defined for instance:

Photo quality
Pose
Composition
subject
setting
color fidelity

The numbering system has never been defined for instance to be the best often means No1 not number 10 just look at the olympics, baseball, tennis, soccer, auto racing, etc etc even hogs are rated as 1-2 or 3, 1 being the best.

Rating everybody a 10 is possibly the worst thing to do or viewed from another point of view, the surest way to render the whole thing as meaningless. People who do this don't have the BALLS to be honest with someone.

If you rated me a 10 because you rate everybody a 10 then your rating of me is worthless. Oh BTW, I don't rate anybody and my ratings are turned off.

RE: List a courageous or funny thing that you have done.

That was indeed courageous. I assume you knew how to swim at the time?

Well, I got married, that took a lot of courage. confused

Seriously though, the most cougageous thing I think I ever did was to let myself get lowered down a ventilation shaft of a hotel that was 10 stories high on a boatswains chair suspended by a rope. There was some doubt if the rope would be long enough to reach the bottom. If it wasn't, I would probably have to jump because there was no way to pull me back up. Oh and this was also in total darkness. I made $25.00 for that job.

RE: To tread on dangerous ground

Excellent writing though I would choose slightly different words. May I humbly submit.

To tread upon the dangerous ground
Of broken glass and burning coals

To walk upon the fallen stars
Whose points can stab right through the soles
[With points that stab right through the soul]

Of tattered cloth designed to save
The skin of one who finds the tolls
[The skin of one who pays the toll]

Of lives that break through fiery dreams
To grasp at those who walk the path
[To covet those who walk the path]

Of carrying ones whose weight grinds down
The feet of those who fail at last

To tread upon the dangerous ground
And lie, now still, in broken glass
[And lie, defeated, in broken glass]

RE: have you ever met anybody that ask's a lot of questions ?

I haven't met you yet!rolling on the floor laughing
