NIST WTC 7 Investigation Finds Building Fires Caused Collapse,

RE: 911 was...

Ambrose, your arguement would be very good if we were talking about a building of ...say 20 stories, because there must be 100's of them in the world. But, we're talking about a 110 story building. How many buildings are there in the world that are that tall? The first tower that collapsed was a shock to everybody. The second tower collapsing was no surprise to anybody.

RE: ARE THESE LADIES REALLY SINGLES?

Do they have a Craigslist in Iran? idea

RE: 911 was...

Well now your engineer friend can give you 2 examples WTC 1 and WTC 2

Ask your friend if prior to the Tacoma Narrows Bridge collapse if he could give you even 1 example of a bridge getting destroyed by a 40 MPH wind. He wouldn't be able to. But he sure can now.

RE: 911 was...

"Hot finished carbon steel begins to lose strength at temperatures above 300°C and reduces in strength at steady rate up to 800°C. The small residual strength then reduces more gradually until the melting temperature at around 1500°C. This behaviour is similar for hot rolled reinforcing steels. For cold worked steels including reinforcement, there is a more rapid decrease of strength after 300°C (Lawson & Newman 1990). In addition to the reduction of material strength and stiffness, steel displays a significant creep phenomena at temperatures over 450°C. The phenomena of creep results in an increase of deformation (strain) with time, even if the temperature and applied stress remain unchanged (Twilt 1988).

High temperature creep is dependent on the stress level and heating rate. The occurrence of creep indicates that the stress and the temperature history have to be taken into account in estimating the strength and deformation behaviour of steel structures in fire. Including creep explicitly within analytical models, is complex. For simple design methods, it is widely accepted that the effect of creep is implicitly considered in the stress-strain-temperature relationships."

As to the heat potential of jet fuel (Kerosene) verses gasoline:

1 gallon of Gasoline contains 125,000 BTU's
1 Gallon of Kerosene contains 134,000 BTU's

2 things happened during the raging fire that was burning in the WTC 1, the lateral beams that were spanning the building between adjacent outer walls lost a large % of their strength which caused them to sag. 2, This sagging caused the beam to shorten thus pulling in the outer walls which were the main vertical support members of the structure. Once the outer walls were pulled out of plumb they no longer had the strength to support the floors above them and they buckled causing the upper floors to "pancake" onto the floors below until the entire structure collapsed to the ground. "Pancaking" is a form of building collapse that is well known to structural engineers and Architects.

The fires brought the buildings down. period
The planes started the fires. Period

RE: 911 was...

I wasn't going to post to this thread but it so happens That I had made several deliveries to the World Trade Center. I would bring pallets of freight, mostly office supplies in my truck and unload them at the dock in the sub basement. My company had a crew of about 8 guys who worked there full time and they would break down the skids and distribute the supplies to the various offices throughout the twin towers. There was no place these guys didn't have access to. So when some idiot who claims the "government" planted bombs in the building which is what brought it down, well, I really have to laugh.
And the fact that the buildings fell straight down like a "controlled demolition" well, there was no other way a building like that COULD come down other than straight down. Does anybody really think it would tip over? Remember, the destruction started near the top, not the bottom. Those buildings could just about support their own weight under normal conditions of wind and temperature with a safe enough margin but crashing an airliner into them and a raging fire is not what the architechs who built it planned for.

I'm no fan of George Bush in fact I think he should spend the rest of his life in prison for what he did to this country but I refuse to believe he or his administration had ANY hand in 9/11.

RE: SHOULD MADOFF GO TO JAIL ?

No apologies necessary, I'm used to it. I just didn't want the wrong image going out there.
Welcome to CS btw.handshake

RE: SHOULD MADOFF GO TO JAIL ?

Dude, You're new here so I'll just tell you that my name has nothing to do with drugs. It is the name of a Rockabilly song by Roy Orbison from the early 50's when he was with SUN records.

RE: 911 was...

heh heh heh laugh thumbs up

RE: SHOULD MADOFF GO TO JAIL ?

Many of the people that invested with him were very wealthy which only proves money can't buy brains or common sense. So many of his victims made the classic mistake of putting all their eggs in one basket. Another mistake they made was doing business with a friend or in some cases a relative.

I believe that the SEC needs to get seriously beaten up over this considering they had complaints about him from years ago and did nothing. The image of the SEC will be forever tarnished over this just like NASA is tarnished by the Challenger disaster.

RE: How come all the decent men and women on CS can't make a love connection

Everybody is searching for Mr or Mrs Right. People don't want to get involved with someone because they think that there's always going to be something better to come along and they don't want to settle for ordinary or average. As you mentioned, distance is also a very big deterant as is religeon, political leanings and financial considerations. How many profiles have you seen (mostly womens) that mentions the guy should be gainfully employed cause they aren't about to support a a man (been there done that). I can't remember ever seeing a mans profile that demanded the woman have a job but I don't make a habit of reading mens profiles either. Smoking is another issue. Many non smokers will not date a smoker, period. Then there's age. Too many people take the age bracket that people put in their profile way to literally. I think it's merely a starting point.
Then too there is the confidence issue. She's so beautiful she could get any man, what would she want with me, and vice versa.
Then there's the issue of kids and pets.
I could go on.

Some Hungarian Recipes

LYE SOAP
From the Settlement Cookbook circa 1920

5 Lbs. lukewarm melted GREASE 1 Lb. LYE
3 Tsps BORAX 1/4 Cup AMMONIA
1 Quart Cold WATER

Fats that are not fit for food may be made into soap. Dissolve the LYE in COLD Water and let stand until cool, then add the Fat slowly, stirring constantly. Mix the other ingredients together and add to the first mixture. Stir the whole until thick and light colored. Pour into a pan lined with cloth. Mark into pieces of desired size before the soap becomes hard. When hard, break pieces apart and pile in such a way that soap may dry out well.

Note:
Soap will be a little harsh until it ages (about 30-90 days).
Note: Original recipe called for the addition of 1 Tsp SALT and of all things, 2 Tbls SUGAR No idea why and I leave these items out.
Caution: Lye is a very powerful base which will take the skin off your hands in seconds. Always wear latex gloves when working with Lye. Be careful of splashes also, Never add water to Lye but add Lye to water.

RE: Spin a yarn...any yarn.

ok.

.....I suddenly found myself flying through the air backwards, I fell to the ground in the drainage ditch on the side of the road sliding head first down the mountain with my hands and feet clawing at the air. I was going about 40 MPH and freezing cold snow was packing into my shirt. Through it all I kept hearing a car horn blowing. I recognized it as the horn of my car and I couldn't figure why Teddy was blowing it. The thought that was going through my mind was to get to my feet as quickly as possible, run after the car, grab the front bumper and dig my heels into the snow in an effort to keep the car from crashing through the guard rail and into the abyss on the other side of the road. Little did I realize that the car probably came to a stop before I did. I got to my feet and ran up to the car
which had jumped the center divider and was facing North with the left wheels on the South bound side and the right wheels on the North bound side. It's possible that center island saved Carl and Teddys' life. I grabbed the drivers door handle. It was so cold that my hand actually stuck to it and nearly ripped the skin from my palm. It was then that I realized just how cold it was.
I was really struck by what I saw when I opened the door. There was Teddy sitting in the drivers seat (he never drove a car in his life and I've always wondered what it was like for him to be thrust behind the wheel of a car going sideways down a mountain in the dark freezing winter night).
He had both hands on the horn ring, not the steering wheel, the Horn Ring. He was staring straight ahead. Poor Teddy, He looked terrified! I thought I would bring him back from never never land by injecting a little levity into the situation. I said "Teddy, stop blowing the horn or you'll wake the dead". He came around. Some guy in a Chevy stopped to give us a lift. We had to retrieve our rifles which flew out of the trunk into the snow bank before the holes they made were covered over with the falling snow which was coming down very heavily. we got our stuff and the Chevy guy took us to the police station. a cop there drove us to a hotel in peekskill where we stayed the night til the train to NYC came the next day.
....to be continued.

RE: True story...............Joshua Bell

There is not a doubt in my mind that if I was there I would have listened for the full 45 minutes having tried to teach myself to play the violin from a book, I think I would have reccognized a master at work. Just shows how wrapped up in themselves most people today are. I guess you can't expect much from a society that places rap "music" barf at the top in popularity.

RE: Spin a yarn...any yarn.

You people suck at spinning yarns! Now just sit back and let the master yarn spinner show you how it's done!

We had gone to Carls house where we stayed on earlier trips mainly for the purpose of securing the place for the winter. The season for deer was already over, only bear remained open. I thought, what the hell would I do with a bear even if I was unlucky enough to see one? It was good getting out in the great North Woods one last time though. We had been hearing about a big snowstorm all day that was pounding NYC but where we were it was clear and cold with not a trace of snow. We started back
to NYC around 6 PM just as the first snow flakes began to fall. We were listening to the radio for weather and traffic reports. They were saying that the speed limit on the NY Thruway was
lowered to 35 MPH. We decided to take Rt 9W instead, a winding 2 lane road. As we were going South there were 3 factors which were working against us which we were for the most part
unaware of. 1, the storm was travelling from the South to the North. We were heading right into it. 2, The more time we spent on the road the deeper the snow was getting. 3, It was very
cold, 0f deg. if fact. If that wasn't enough, the tires on my car were virtually bald. I was planning to replace them when I got back home. We had been on the road about 2 hours as we were
nearing Storm King Mtn. near Peekskill NY. Carl was asleep in the back seat and Teddy was asleep leaning against the passenger door in front. I started down the mountain at about 40mph.
The road curved to the right in a long continuous arc. Barely perceptibly the back end of the car began to dog walk to the left. I automatically compensated with the steering wheel. The front end made no effort to respond. I found myself going perfectly side ways. The snow illuminated by the bright headlights, was moving from left to right. I could see the jagged rock outcroppings of the mountain flashing by as fast as the snow. I thought it might be a good idea to wake Teddy.
I shook him and told him to wake up and look out the windshield. Upon seeing the snow and rocks whizzing by he said "Why did you wake me, I always wanted to die in my sleep". I started to laugh when in a blink of an eye.......

That's enough

RE: Do we have a Right to choose "Life" and Death?

Very well said, 100% on the money.thumbs up

RE: How's the weather out your way?????

32f here right now raining off & on today and supposedly tomorrow. I'm hoping for a blizzard to dump about 2 feet of snow on us but I don't think that will happen. We've been in a water shortage all year and a heavy snowfall would break the drought we're in.

Some Hungarian Recipes

I happen to be in possession of an un-opened 1 lb jar of Lekvar that I have been saving for years in anticipation of making some Palachinta.laugh

BTW Some recipes call for 1/4 cup sugar in the pancake batter.

RE: 65 % of Americans (USA) are Obese. Canadians, 50%. Why ?

The answer is simple IMO.

McDonalds was born in California and Illinois.
Burger King started in Florida.
Wendy's was from Ohio.
KFC is from Kentucky.

RE: What song is playing in your head right now?

Don't laugh but:
