Most whiskeys are made from at least one malted grain. It's what gives whiskey it's taste. They mix in non-malted grains as well to vary the blend to a particular taste.
Poteen is non-malted, since it is made with potatoes and not grain, so safe to drink. If you get a good batch it tastes pretty similar to whiskey, or if you heat it with ginger ale or lemonade it tastes like a good hot toddy, and has healing benefits.
If the powers-that-be keeps us fighting among ourselves long enough about which side we are on, we won't notice the next scam they are perpetrating until we are fed the next topic to fight about.
Best getting professional help on this one. Many people with bi-polar don't have the same set of symptoms. A psychiatrist or other professional would be your best bet to ask questions of, in particular someone who is dealing with your friend and knows the history.
I know this because I often work with people with bi-polar through the mental health association here.
