It is true they have to meet the political standards and have to be seen to be obeying international rules.
I personally find the timing in these matters always coincides with agendas for something else. I'm sure they could have found Karadzic long before this but the timing had to be right in order to show the EU that they were getting with the program for inclusion. Karadzic has been OPENLY lecturing in Belgrade, albeit with a little bearded disguise, for years.
I have seen this happen before. There would have been no benefit politically to having him caught before. A bit like Saddam, or the fact that despite satellite coverage, even infrared technology, picking out and identifying individuals from terrorist training camps in the deserts of eastern countries, they still haven't "found" Osama.
They have found Karadzic now when they have tantalised the masses about inclusion, gauging their eagerness for inclusion against their hatred for each other and need for vengance, for least violent reactions from activists. He's just an offering to the God's that be!
Political and psychological manipulation at its best.
Good media coverage now and they are set to prove how co-operative they are with the EU, whom they think will put them up a few notches, time wise, in the inclusion stakes, and so reap the financial benefits sooner.
It's always about timing.............. and money..........
So far we have one American contributor to this thread, who has been there. All the others are Europeans, or didn't you notice.
After all the crap I have been reading in threads in the last week about how little Europeans are supposed to know about American politics or current affairs, and being told we are ignorant and shouldn't be listened to regarding American affairs, I just got a bit miffed that it was a bloody cheek considering most of the Europeans here contribute on a regular basis and with quite considerable knowledge on American affairs when it would appear it doesn't work the other way around and Americans could care less about European affairs, much less be knowledgable about them.
It would be too long and convoluted to explain here but here is a link that will explan why it is so important that Serbia stabilizes in order to join the EU.
They can't join until their government and counrty policies are stable and they badly want to join for the benifits that they will have in better ecomonics, trade and work opportunities for the people there as well as freedom to live in other european countries. While the country is unstable they won't be let join the EU. At the moment they are trying to speed up the process of joining by meeting certain conditions like bringing past offenders to justice and then restabilizing the masses again.
This is the stage where it could go all awry because of exactly what you described. They have been hidden by supporters so long they are like urban heros and that is a dangerous situation for future peace. It could turn into a Northern Ireland situation all over again all to easily and erupt into more bloodshed for years with people taking sides all over again.
I hope they get Mladic too and protest is good as long as it carries people forward to positive change. Everyone protests when change happens, but hopefully they will see sense on this and not have it end up with even morelives lost and a tentative peace lost for years.
My brother in law, an Irish policeman, was killed in Sarajavo while on peacekeeping dutes as a direct result of what this man caused, leaving a wilfe and 3 small children.
While Kardzic led a life of comfort/ luxury/ peace, in Belgrade, and his grandchildren live comfortably America, a lot more than the thousands he massacred got killed trying to reinstate peace there.
The only way there is gong to be any inclusion for this eastern european state is to have justice seen to be done for the families of the thousands he murdered.
We have some Americans telling europeans they don't know anything about American politics when in actual fact Europeans take and interest and are educated enough to comment intelligently on American current affairs at least, while we then get comments here like go to the "EU forums" from people like this who can't be arsed to look at anything politically current worldwide that doesn't have America interfering in it.
I like intelligence, not equating to education so much, as quick on the uptake. Able to get the joke, or have the odd smart answer ready. I've met a few very educated people who were not intelligent at all. They were quite boring in that they never got the essence of what was said. I have also met people who hardly went to school who were smart and witty and good fun.
I believe intelligence is definitely not about education or lack of it.
Well it's a bit cloudy here today but it should brighten up by the weekend. I think you will like it. The scenery is spectacular and the beaches are stunning. The peope are friendly and welcoming and you are guaranteed to hear the language spoken in the west and north west of the county because they are Gaeltacht areas (where Gaeilge is spoken all the time).
I'm the kind of fool who says stuff and then stands my ground waiting for the backlash. I would never do it with the intention of hurting anyone, but do believe in plain speaking and honesty.
Sometimes I couch the "does my as look big in this" with "I liked you better in the other outfit" or something, or lace it with humour, because there are ways of telling the truth and being kind too.
RE: Is the capture of Radovan Karadzic a chance for healing for the Balkans?
