My father has had series of strokes for a few years now and is definitely not compitent in many ways to look after himself. He is dizzy and often falls over, sometimes hurting himself. He refuses to stop driving his car. He goes out walking alone. He spends hours in his garden weeding etc. even though he often doesn't know where he is after one of his turns. He recons he is fine and has an independant streak a mile wide and refuses all offers of help.
Family won't cross him because it just upsets him and raises his blood pressure even more, and because they are afraid to fall out with him in case he will change his will and they won't inherit their share of his nearly 4 million.
He won't allow anyone to live with him, since my mother died a few months ago, nor will he allow regular help, except occasionally a home help a few hours a week to tidy and dust a little. He won't tolerate family help at all.
The trouble is not that he is not intelligent or losing his faculties, but that he is too intelligent and sees all the ruses comming and has an answer ready for them all, to get what he wants.
Well, people have to have belief in the definition of words and concepts like "good" and "bad" and "justice", in order to consider the welfare of others.
We define them, and then refine our beliefs in order to do what we consider best for them, when making decisions that affect their lives.
In an ideal world, people's welfare would be taken care of by the consideration of these concepts. But then we don't live in an ideal world do we?
I'd have to seriously give deeper consideration to an alternative way of looking at this subject, if I could even conceive of one......
This is probably why it hasn't been done so far and the old tried and tested methods are still in use, no matter how inadequate they are.
I can't see that it would be any different in the future. Take for example public standards of morality in east versus western cultures.
For the sake of arguement here, muslim or "modest" countries and western or "wanton" countries in their standards of dress and social codes, and what is morally acceptable.
Now I can almost hear the screams of outrage at even my use of these descriptive terms, but morally speaking it is ok to dress (or undress) as you like, and it is acceptable, in western countries, and by the same token it is morally correct to cover up all but your eyes, (even them sometimes), in eastern countries.
Two opposing standards, yet in the eyes of those making laws for the masses, both morally correct.
Now how would you propose making laws that encompassed both of these cultures where everyone accepted the standard set?
Can you see that happening in the future?
I can't!!!
And this is only one facet of one issue...........
It comes down to individuals versions of what they believe constitute "good" and "bad" and "justice". Talk to any 3 people on these subjects and you will get versions of 3 different answers. So how could that work universally?
Here we are into the issue of collectives versus individuals. Each individual has their own moral code, which gets compromised or even negated when they join a collective, so morality couldn't be a set standard because even the people making those choices for others in a collective, often dont subscribe to the tenets of the collective, because of the compromises that they have to make as individuals.
Same reasons it can't work on a grander scale, ie: universally.
Sorry that wasn't very clear maybe. If it was to even be thought about, some one, or some people, would have to set the standard.
Since I agree with Ambrose that it owes a lot to the nature of the beast, that couldn't happen, because everyone has a different idea of what is right and wrong and different cut off points and degrees of both sides of the equation.
So it would have to either start with a dictatorship, or clans, or gangs, opposing each other for the right to be right.
That would just lead to anarchy and chaos and go in the opposite way to what it was setting out to do in the first place.
I'm going to throw a cog in the works here or go out on a limb and mention natural selection, since some of you believe morality comes from nature. The only way I think that a universal morality could exist is if you natually selected people to live that way. Culling of people who showed a propensity for abhorrent behaviour, inconsideration, etc. and breeding people for their moral strengths.
Not saying I'd advocate that, but saying that it would be the only way to ensure even the basics of universal morality.
Therefore it is never going to happen that everyone will live by a code designed by man's rules, because culling, or natural selection, by it's very nature, violates moral tenets.
You can fill a large bathmitt with the mixture and use it on your skin when you shower. It will have exactly the same effect on the skin even if you are not lying in it.
Here we have all the amenities and cross border concessions and services, but I think that the difference between here and other places is that most things here are privatised and very competative. It keeps costs down. We also don't vote for anyone locally who doesn't keep things the way we like them. It kind of even makes us different to most of the rest of the country that way.
Move to Donegal J. We seem to have the best of all possible worlds when I hear what the rest of you have to pay.
We have two collections a week for each ordinary and recyclable (alternately), rubbish. We can pay weekly or monthly or yearly. Most pay weekly because we wouldn't put it out even once a week anyway.
In england people have to pay a tax just for living there. Differing rates depending on where, what services they get and such. Everyone has to pay, not just houseowners, businesses and such.
In Ireland we don't have to pay that.
Ground rent was a payment to the government for the amout of sq ft your property stood on. It is only payable by businesses now.
Not up here. We don't need them. Donegal in mountainous and full of natural fresh water lakes. The government is talking about piping some of our water to other places now because there is a shortage in some of the cities There may be plants in places like Dublin or Cork or such.
RE: Is it easier to for you to express yourself verbally or with the written word
I've done that twice now on dates.......Well maybe a little talking....
