I live in the countryside, the woods. All I have to do is go out the door

Right now I'm working on my vegetable garden and getting ready forthe local fairs. I'll be entering canned goods, maybe some veggies and of course some of my poultry.

I guess this might sound weird to city folk, but I've already admitted I'm weird

First it was my pets and my chores at my parent's business.

Then it was my animals and more chores in a "back to the land" home in Vermont.

And then it was two children, who have grown up to be extraordinary people.

And now it's my 19 year old son who is handicapped and will be with me at home always.

And the chickens. And my dog Belle.

Someone always needs to care for living things

My Dad was fun.

Very social...in the Lions Club, a Mason and loyal friend of the Dartmouth baseball team.

He was a golfer, skier, swimmer, bowler and was always up for a good time with his buddies. Mom hated his drinking, his friends.

He taught me all the things a girl should know....carpentry, plumbing, how to shoot hoops, play golf and throw a football

He and my mother wanted a boy - it was their last chance

I turned out to be too female, too smart and not quite what he expected.

But I think he was proud of me.

And he liked it that I put his tools back after I used them

I wouldn't think any less of them.

Before my son came into my life, I had no understanding of handicaps.

Nor did I have much empathy.

But now I've been on the other side.

I've experienced how people avoid eye contact, or stare or just generally stay away.

You mean actually meeting someone in person??

That doesn't scare me.

The thing that makes me nervous is finding some one to date and then having that person react in a negative way to my son who lives with me.

Not everyone reacts well to handicapped people.

And life with a severely handicapped person takes a lot of adaptation.

But then, my son's care is my job.

And a date is just a date.

Of all the programs around, it's one of my favorites.

Did you see the episode where he made a luxury car by cutting two cars up and then using duct tape and welds to make a huge, long car that wouldn't fit in the garage?
