One of my Cavalier King Charles Spaniel's name is Princess, so I wouldn't be able to call anyone or any other dog Princess, there is only one Princess in our household!
On this side of the pond it's associated with working class, or nouveau riche culture trying to project glamour, style and good-breeding and failing miserably. It's often used as a theatrical stereotype.
And as Berrie mentioned, it's associated with poor behaviour, particularly someone who believes themselves to deserve more than they do and who tantrums when they don't get what they want.

jac_the_gripper: But Princess, the fire service have to cut your Ferrari to get your pony out of the back seat. They're refusing payment to cut up the pony instead...
Harryonline: What about wolf whistles ? and cars horning ? like or dislike ?
These days it tends to be revving the engine as you're crossing the road at the lights to make you start and look round. That pisses me off.
Although I do find it funny when youngsters beep, or shout at me from behind, but realise when I turn round I'm old enough to be their mother. It's the expression on their faces.

There's a kernel of mockery to that term of affection. It's like calling her kitten. Am I being cutesy and nice or am I teasing her fragility and sense of entitlement? It's usually somewhere in the middle. And it's something I say only to girls who know me well - seldomly friends, occasionally my Sisters, most often to my girlfriend.
Also, it's something I don't really say to women older than me and my term of affection for them is "wench".
