Qualifications to become Speaker of the House...
Currently, there is a vacancy for the position for Speaker of the House of Representatives. I think Kevin McCarthy was booted out for a bi-partisan effort to stall a government shutdown and that didn't go well with house republicans.Lots of names came up, but what are the qualifications to become speaker of the house?

I'm not sure whether the Republican party has a rule about being in contempt of Congress for refusing to comply with a subpoena and then instead of being held to account, being made chairman of the House Judiciary Comittee, issuing the kind of subpoenas that person is in contempt of.

On the other hand, Kevin McCarthy unilaterally declared an impeachment inquiry into Biden against the rules the Republican party instituted on the recommendation of their own OLC in a bid to protect Trump from impeachment. He broke his own party's rules because Matt Gaetz told him he would be out of a job if he didn't.
You have to ask yourself how much objective authority a speaker has, having been so utterly castrated by the far right element of a chaotic, incompetent party that lacks any modicum of integrity.
The Democrats had a choice between the chaos of not having a speaker, or the potential for the speaker being lead in chains to do far worse than he has aready.
He negotiated a settlement at the 11th hour to avoid a government shut down having previously agreed to terms and then bowing under pressure from the far right to reject, then agreeing again. It's probably an enormous relief for all the people who thought they might not get paid, or even face destitution, that McCarthy was ousted before the far right element got another 45 days to work him over to force a shutdown.
