Anyone play the stock market?

Saturday is never a good day to blog so I am hoping rather than expecting responses. I've just gone into a buying partnership in a small way with lovely man-friend who has played the market for decades (longer even than I have known him) and $$ signs are dancing in my eyes.

Did make me wonder if there are others who dabble or for that matter plow right in, here on CS. I know of one very together lady here who works in the biz and hinted at her that I would love tips. She hinted right back that I could forget it laugh

Actually seems to me any ways that anyone knows of making (or okay gambling) extra cash would be of great interest to most of us.

I know I said I wouldn't be around much this weekend - bite me.
Can I have the first bite please?

No idea about stock markets..

Have a great weekend and enjoy Spain.
Haha K you unnerve me sometimes!!! Er, no!

Yup last loads of laundry being done ready for packing, soooo exciting laugh
K I know you are one who works weekends for extra cash, but no worries if you don't want to comment cool have a great weekend yourself and I've told my sister she just has to get another villa much closer to the CS action instead of being 3 hours and more away from most of the people I'd have liked to meet!
Eleg... If I were you, I will not speculate to invest my money on stock of any company/product.
I will not play the game that I don't really understand what the rule and how to play..

You have to be active in monitoring in stock exchange movement... Which I don't have time for that and I can't count on the agent to play..

It's abt timing...
With great shame yes I do play the stock market. Korean stock market to be precise. Everything about it revolts me, but for the moment I don't have the money to help anyone but me.

Ideally I want to be a multi-millionaire when I'm 50 so I can help my roots, but my business now just will not make that kind of money.
I hear Volkswagen shares are going cheap this week uh oh but probably not as cheap as this time next week wow
Z - classic case of blue chip suddenly going belly-up laugh

And yet - this may be the time to buy. I suspect a lot more fraud will suddenly be uncovered with other car companies and VW will end up smelling if not of roses, slightly less bad than they smell right now!
Ob - shame? Oh dear, is playing the market plutocratic and socially revolting? I'll never get this PC thing right. sigh
Is that Pee-Cee? I thought Pee-Cee was the system of universal goodspeak everyone indulges in as a substitute for actually doing anything for anyone else.
Yup, that's the one
Ele, I havent given up the chance to meet you when you come over. Just alittle complicated to get to you. Next time fly to Malaga and we can do a CS meeting. There are some very nice CS members in Malaga.
Sent me a msg by phone before fly so I can save your number. Weathers wonderful.
So be prepared for fun.
If Scotland goes independent you may want to have a little think, Biff. It wouldn't be long until the Glaswegians are at the door without a state/mountain of debt bribing them at bay. In future times it may not be in your self-interest to be so self-interested.
Ob, oh dear, your grandparents would be disappointed in the company you keep.

Or you could get an attitude adjustment and lighten up a little, even at the expense of your immortal soul, especially as I suspect you don't believe in immortal souls.

Life will get better. Or worse. But if you think positive, it will seem better. sad flower
K, definitely next time Malaga, especially as I suspect sister is not prepared to sell her villa and move!
I have played it. Swam in it actually. Made a few million at one point, then gambled again and lost it all. Oh well. It is only money. Sometimes it goes faster than it comes, sometimes it comes in so fast you can scarcely believe what your screen (or the statement letters) are saying. Then one or two margin calls later where did it go? Money is like the tide, it ebbs, flows, then ebbs away again as the moon rises and falls.
Yikes, Ken, pure rollercoaster stuff! Do you keep well clear now?
My BFF in Canada has been in for years and has done pretty well. Her husband wanted to take over the portfolio but after a few hair-raising arguments he now has his own and they compete (on a friendly basis) one up, then the other. He likes risks, she likes steady!
blushing Oh dear me I am living on my ill gotten gainstongue
No at the time my bank shares took a dive, THEN after a couple of weeks tripled I made a killing BUT then found out professor professor bad bad people had been rigging whatever it was. Me I was clean dancing as a whistle but when the deeds came out of the banks I felt badroll eyes Now i learn my lesson as I have not recieved much interest on savings last 7 or is it 8 years so bank got all its money backrolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing
Nice luck on the timing, Red! My previous employers twisted our arms to buy shares, turned out the best luck ever when they were bought up and the share price went from around 2 quid to over 8. THEN I was sorry I hadn't bought every chance I could get.

Funny, no-one else has mentioned any other ways of making some extra dosh yet. No-one running a little workshop from their garage? Guess you'd be too busy to come on line if you did.

I saw an article last week in registering your home / garden / whatever with an agency for possible use as a film set - one example was the very neat, tidy but unremarkable suburban house where Harry Potter lived with the Dursleys, the owners of that house must have done quite nicely out of the films ...
eleg I do crafts, but they keep me busy it is more for that then money making. I could have done with that knowledge when younger as judging by crafts you can buy they go for extornist prices or maybe when you count up hours in work that maybe why priced so high. I just price mine to be able to buy more materials. retirement is long if you do not do lots of things.teddybear teddybear
Red, that's a good idea. Become a celebrity and you could push your prices sky-high laugh I believe Carly Simon is a professional knitter and sells her stuff for a small fortune ...
I don't play stock market, but it could be an investment... but, one should have a mixed portfolio, don't put all the eggs in one basket...., do proper research and keep the eye on the ball (read a lot and make sure of future trends and fluctuations in the market for the shares you are interested to buy...
Ooby, I stand corrected, but be reassured my partner in this enterprise takes it seriously.
Sola and LAF - very good advice! I would never advise anyone to hand over their dosh and wait expectantly for rich rewards wow

This is a slightly different case - this is an old friend, when he stayed here recently he checked on line about 6 times a day and I was intrigued enough to ask lots of questions. He said (probably to shut me up because he wanted to concentrate) that one of his ventures was an investment group which loans cash to small businesses, relatively low risk but interesting, and that I should try it. I looked horrified at the thought so he (very nicely, I thought) said he would set up a separate partnership for us both, starting from scratch with a small monthly kick-in. We're equally investing around the price of a carton of cigarettes, those $$ signs in my eyes are wishful thinking. (But you never know ...)

I'm only explaining in such detail as your respective comments made me realize I could be implying that people with perhaps more money than sense should leap into financial bed with people with more sense than money and gamble their all. Noooooooooooooooooo!!!! Don't do it!!! My buddy takes it seriously but even he isn't hugely committed. He earns perhaps £1000 a year in dividends to top up his income, enjoys it very much, and was offering me a very small part in a giant worldwide fascination shared by millions so I could enjoy it too without having to break my teeth learning the hard way.

But thanks - I mean it - for the warning hug
Hi biff, yes, I'm a stock trader, I Work harder at this then when I had my computer business. Many good comments so far and you can see they're all tilted to the cautious side, and correctly so. The markets are about two things fear and greed, It is a game of psychology tring to one up the crooks of Walk
Wall Street. I've been doing this full time for the last 7 years and partime for over 30 years. I have an accounting/finance background and do not suggest anyone using their money try it without at a minimum these skill sets. I trade/invest in the bio-tech space because I enjoy learning about new drugs/therapies.

If anyone says they have a hot tip run fast they are probably looking to dump their stock to u suspecting buyers like you. Caveat Emptor
Sands, long time no see! Listen have I got a girl for you - whoops, no, I forgot, I don't match-make any more help

TBH it does look too engrossing for me to ever risk serious money without serious knowledge but I am fascinated watching those fascinated by it. No wonder you aren't on here much, but we miss you ..
Hello Legs,

I don't really dabble with the stock market directly. I picked a good mutual fund and let them do all the leg work for me.

But, the US stock market is on shaky ground right now. Don't put more in it than you can afford to lose (at least for the short term). Even though, I doubt you will really lose anything (at least in the long term).

I had a professor that was big time into the stock market. One could even label him as obsessed with it. But, he told the class that even from the times of the Great Depression, the stock market averaged a return of around 10%. So, even if you have money in it and the bottom falls out....hold strong and don't sell.

Hi Biff

My step-dad is a remisier. My mom with her dynamic group get companies to be listed in the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange for a very handsome fee.

Unfortunately, I don't dabble in stock market doh
Hi Johnny I think the stockmarket worldwide is in a state of flux, and they do say when the US sneezes, the rest of the world catches a cold! I wouldn't normally go near it but my investment is tiny and it could be the start of an absorbing interest laugh
Hi DC - I hope your mom pays you occasional bonuses in the form of shares, though! Cash is king, but company shares worked out nicely for me once before hug

You have your Sunday photo up, I see, very relaxed laugh
Business has been real slow lately therefore there's need to upload more 'relaxing' pics to entice 'em in wink batting batting batting giggle
Oh, I failed to mention that I help my mom in her restaurant, one of her many side businesses . wink
Wanted to invest in companies in the stock market for the longest time now, when I was studying finance years ago, they talked about penny stocks, like 1c shares or 1p shares, not big on taking risks.

??????

Do these cheap stocks still exist and if they do, can you recommend some to me to invest in?

laugh applause
