How odd is reading?

When you think about it, I mean. We write down odd symbols and other people look at those odd symbols and they make sense, create a conversation or a picture.

They can move us to tears, make us laugh, make us understand someone else's life, make us angry.

Odd little symbols which reach across time and space and enter other people's minds. Poetry - literature - a scribbled handwritten note through your door - newspaper headlines -

Sometimes we have to read them two or three times to take in the message. Most of the time, though, the message is immediate. The odd symbols have done their job.

To jest, tylko kiedy czytamy cos, ze nie ma zadnego sensu w ogóle ze nawet zdajemy sobie sprawe, to robimy.*

*It's only when we read something that doesn't make any sense at all that we even realize we are reading. To a Pole, that's the first sensible thing I've said. laugh

To me, words are the most powerful method of communication.

Maybe it is the fact that you can read it and re-read it, and get a deeper meaning each time.

Of course, verbal interaction is important, very important.

But once the words are out, they are lost in the wind, never to be heard again.
I'm feeling a little bit odd myself. Normally, I'd be able to get back to sleep but not this morning...Hmmmmm....hmmm

Anyway, I'm gonna make myself a BIG mug of coffee. You want some, Biff?
Oh! How about you, Molly? Coffee?
Coffee is one of the most powerful words of all. Yes please grin
Biff, I never understand what your sayinguh oh
reasons why I hardly ever post on your blogs.. and given I like you, I'd like to but heck how can I when I don't know what your muttering about half the time dunno

that being said, when it comes to talking nonsense you do say it best laugh
Molly, yes, words said are lost, words written down will speak and describe again. And again - down the centuries, even.

One of my favourite tags is fairly ancient - Hillel the Elder said "if not now, when?"

Julius Caesar had some goodies. This too will pass -
good times, and bad times, this too will pass.

Oh I have to go look one, make sure I get it right. It was just one word, but BRILLIANT.

Joining us for coffee? coffee
Mimi, something stronger for me pleasewine
Itchy, haha, thank you!

I understood you. That's how amazing words are. You wrote something, and I read it, and I understood you. Even if you don't understand me rolling on the floor laughing
Oh pooh, turns out to have been a Punch cartoon. However, Charles James Napier was sent to India to retake the rebel territory of Sindh and I had always been told he sent a single word telegram back to the UK -

Peccavi

Which is Latin for "I have sinned" - a pun on Sindh.

Blast. Wish it was true! rolling on the floor laughing
Anyone can help me out here?

What does 'manana' mean in Spanish?

I was told it's " We shall meet one day" Is that true?
Mimi, it means tomorrow

Hasta mañana means Until tomorrow or See you tomorrow.
Oh, it's not true then....moping

Thanks Molly
Biff

It's wayyyyyyyyyyy past your bedtime now scold scold scold
DC, completely confuse the manana person. Say humba kahle. (Humber gahshlee) - it means go gently, go safely, in Zulu.

yay
Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww I wanna stay up a little longer moping

Hey, hang on. You're not the boss of me! rolling on the floor laughing
Won't be chatting to the 'manana' guy anymore, mainly coz he's just 40 uh oh

I turn away men even in their 50's let alone one that's only 40 years of age...sigh
Mimi, if it were meant that way, then it means that hug
Dream, I met a man today that you would flip for. He's mid sixties, tall, slightly stooped, wise warm blue eyes, a lovely nose, a firm mouth, a wonderful stubborn chin. Lean, wiry, good hands -

I didn't really. But did you glimpse him, just for a second, through my words?
Eh" well that's great.. seems we have reached an understanding uh oh

So being the case, get up off the floor you silly woman and brushed yourself down.. dust doesn't suit you too well wink
Molly hug

Biff, you got my interest piqued for a moment there mumbling
Write one for me Biff
I can make him real in my dreams smitten
i'm ok with words, it's spelling that is my struggle. how they came up with some of the spellings is beyond me. i have not mastered the simplest of words. thank heavens for spell check
Molly, I really did see a guy today who made me think of a type you once said you like - he was loping across the parking lot, but it was the hair that made me think it first, a mane of tumbled wavy rich brown hair below his shoulders. He was wearing jeans and a T, not that skinny (I do know you like skinny) but this one had a good chest, and some shape to his arms, and was already tanned. Long slender legs, though, if that helps -
I'd get asked as to why I want a much older men by these younger guys. They are normally curious as to why I prefer an older gentleman.

Here's one that is quite amusing.....

Embedded image from another site

"60 or 70 too old nothing to usd

And he's in his 50's! laugh

"Nothing to use"! rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing

If only he knew how wrong he was grin
Ms Witch, if you used that broom of yours on the floor I wouldn't be dusty. snooty

You taking a dram in your coffee, or just milk?
It certainly didn't not help grin

I don't need long hair thoughlaugh

Slim to fit is my favourite.

I love the inverted triangle smitten
Why the 'inverted triangle', Molly? confused confused confused
that's the tip of the iceberg
Mimi, imagine a triangle across broad shoulders tapering down to a narrow waist smitten
Dream, no more booze for Molly. uh oh
Molly, I'm sorry, I cannot imagine ALL that! laugh

I love 'em wrinkly with not so taut stomach. In fact, I don't mind them being pot-bellied! wink
Too late sigh

All the female readers are lost in a daydream and all the male readers are searching for their weights and exercise bikes.

Curse you Irish, with your 'inverted triangle'. Good words though for summing up a sudden picture, eh?
DC, that was a sudden picture too. rolling on the floor laughing
wine I've only had one beer tonight laugh

Yeah, I like the deadlock look, but I've never dated one.
Brushing you aside there for a minute Biff roll eyes

But Dreams, I've often wondered the same thing...
why much older men?
not only can't you take a compliment, you cut yourself short..
don't you know how wonderful you are?
teddybear
Grow old along with me! The best is yet to be daydream
lol, i admit, i haven't read all of the comments, so i could only think of one type of inverted triangle...and it wasn't on a man conversing
Ok, gotta leave the party now. Thanks for the banter.

Need to get some errands done before the kids wake up.

Byeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee wave
Night, lovely, and thanks for the coffee! hug
BTW, did you know that once you have learned to read, you can't stop?

You are literally unable to stop yourself reading words written in a language you understand. That's why newspaper headlines are in such big letters, so your eye is caught. That's often why they're obscure, to make you puzzled enough to want to know more.
