So I have 4 Butternut squash vines here this year. Today I decided enough leaves had faded back on two of them to go ahead and harvest the yield from them. This (plus 2 others previously devoured) is the yield from the two vines in question. The other 2 vines have similar yields waiting but I haven't harvested them yet. Noting also I still have some green babies coming in.
Although a good knife will eventually saw through the stems, I find the large sheet metal shears shown to be the quickest way of detaching them from the vines. I am running out storage space and still have 2 vines to go.
This was a good strain of seed. I am saving some of the seeds of course.
I usually just roast and eat (w/butter, salt & pepper) but here the man goes a step further and, since it looks tasty, I may try this..

No chance. I couldn't even finish my grill, .if I bent forward right now food would shoot out my ears.

This is a Butternut Squash from my veggie patch. This type of squash is called a winter squash. That is because, unlike summer squash such as the zucchini, the winter squash can be kept for months after harvesting them. They are easy to grow and quite tasty roasted or sauteed. They also can be used to make an excellent soup. The plant itself is a vine with runners that can fork or grow 40 or more feet in length. It can climb shrubs or just lay on the ground. The squash don't care. Four or five squash on average can be produced by each runner. There are gardener's tricks that can sometimes increase the yield to seven or even more squash per runner.
At long last, they are finally beginning to turn red..

A new weight loss device offers a novel approach to cutting calories: draining them from the stomach before they are fully digested.
The AspireAssist system consists of a thin tube implanted in the stomach, connecting to an outside port on the skin of the belly. About 20 minutes after finishing a meal, users connect the port to an external device, which drains some of the recently-consumed food into the toilet.
The manufacturer—Aspire Bariatrics based in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania—says its system removes about 30 percent of food stored in the stomach before it begins causing weight gain.
The Food and Drug Administration approved the device on Tuesday for adults who are obese, with a body mass index of 35 to 55, and have not been able to lose weight with other methods.
