True Perfection.

It's a very rare thing. But, it does sometimes exist.
You may have even personally experienced it,
perhaps in the afterglow of a fantastic sunset,
and/or a lover's embrace.
It is quite memorable, when you do.

Right now, for your listening pleasure, I serve it up for you.

Here is the perfect interplay between Anita Baker's tremendous vocals
and Joe Sample's talented acoustic piano playing.

This is from her 'Rhythm of Love' album. Take a listen.

Short and Sweet...

I had a comment on my last blog that it was too wordy. Okay, I can do requests. I did a YouTube search tonight and found a video titled Short and Sweet. The amazing thing is, one of my favorite guitarists David Gilmore performs the song.

Songs about D R U G S...

Long before I was born, people were writing songs about drugs. Due to censorship many had hidden meanings. The 1960's changed all that. The first I can recall was Steppenwolf with The Pusher. On a sweeter note, the Beatles recorded Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. I read that was about their experiences with LSD.
It doesn't end there and though I respect a musicians passion for recording music about drugs, drug addiction and recovering from broken lives from the use of drugs, it sits oddly that there's such a great audience who want to listen to songs about drugs.

She's divorced with two kids in middle school, has a great job, nice house, eats healthy, non-smoker, rarely has more than a social drink with the girls, concerned about the environment, dedicates time for the gym, seeing to it that her kids make it to soccer practice and attend school marathons. She gives 100% support for all women's causes and has a pink ribbon bumper sticker.

Do you know her? There's a few on every block. At the Bar-B-Que she's friendly and enjoys the music... the transformation occurs when they play a Clapton song. That's were she has her arms in the air... well at least one as the other is holding her drink. Bumping butts with the other girls who want to be like her and all the single guys are wanting to be with her.

What Clapton song? Cocaine.
Maybe that's not the right song to sing in front of your kids.
Come sing it with me...

"If you wanna hang out, you've gotta take her out... Cocaine
If you wanna get down, down on the ground... Cocaine
She don't like, she don't lie, she don't lie... Cocaine

If you got bad news, you wanna kick them blues... Cocaine
When your day is done, and you wanna run... Cocaine
She don't like, she don't lie, she don't lie... Cocaine
If your thing is gone, and you wanna ride on... Cocaine
Don't forget this fact, you can't get it back... Cocaine

She don't like, she don't lie, she don't lie... Cocaine
She don't like, she don't lie, she don't lie... Cocaine"

Annabelle Lee...

Probably 20 years ago, I took up learning to play Irish Uilleann bagpipes. It was hard for me as I had no understanding of Traditional Irish music with all the cuts, taps, and nuances that make the music so colorful. I was a member of a message board for Irish music and learned many of the techniques about the instrument and also about the music. Life led me in a different path... I sold all my pipes and put that musical interest on hold.

As an offshoot, the message board also had sections for other instruments related to Irish music and that included a tenor banjo. Pitched lower than a standard banjo, the tenor banjo has a deeper 'twang' that resonates a little longer.

Many of the people who settled in the Appalachian mountain region in America are of Irish decent. They brought over a similar style of music that's not as difficult (for me) to follow. Their gatherings are mostly of stringed instruments... including a tenor banjo.

I came across a young woman who was playing for many years and was sought out in music circles for her voice. She plays a custom made 5 string tenor banjo that blends perfectly with her voice.

She was featured in a PBS special called Transatlantic Sessions. I was surfing YouTube today and happened to remember the video.

Her name is Sarah Jarosz and she's singing a song called Annabelle Lee

I hope you enjoy it as much as I do...

Parchman Farm song...

If you were in a cover band in the late 60's to early 70's Parchman Farm was most likely on your song list.
Written in 1940 by Bukka White, covered by Mose Allison in 1957 and again in 1964, it's been covered by (safe to say) at least a dozen times by other bands and solo artists.
On a previous blog, 'gonelikethewimd' posted a Mose Allison video that lead me to do (more) research.

The version first played was from John Mayall Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton, released in 1966. Often called the 'Beano' album. That's a subject for another blog.

After Mayall, I switched to the 1970's harder version on Parchman Farm recorded by Cactus.
Both Mayall and Cactus credited Mose Allison for the song. It wasn't until today I found out Bukka was the original composer.

From previous research I knew that Parchman Farm was the Mississippi State Penitentiary. It was hell for anyone sentenced there as stories of slavery and working from sunrise to sunset often in 100 degree heat.
Possibly the history of Parchman Farm could be a future blog of mine.

Electronic Music...

Not long ago Merc posted some dance videos in the forums. I believe the style is called dubstep and I bookmarked a few. Today while cleaning I clicked a link and came across some other Techno/Trance/Electronic music... a style of music that is global. No borders. It's enjoyed around the world!

One link led to another, to another, to another...
I'm headed out on some hobby fun today and the beat is playing in my head.
