Jimi Hendrix 75th birthday today

If he was still alive, he would be 75 today.
Would he scream at his grandkids..."turn that music down !!" ?
Probably not. laugh

Here's some interesting history on Jimi from his official website,
which I copied and pasted the beginning below.
You can read the whole thing by going to the link I included further below;

Widely recognized as one of the most creative and influential musicians of the 20th century,
Jimi Hendrix pioneered the explosive possibilities of the electric guitar.
Hendrix’s innovative style of combining fuzz, feedback and controlled distortion created a new musical form.
Because he was unable to read or write music, it is nothing short of remarkable that Jimi Hendrix’s meteoric rise
in the music took place in just four short years. His musical language continues to influence a host of modern musicians,
from George Clinton to Miles Davis, and Steve Vai to Jonny Lang.

Jimi Hendrix, born Johnny Allen Hendrix at 10:15 a.m. on November 27, 1942, at Seattle’s King County Hospital,
was later renamed James Marshall by his father, James “Al” Hendrix.
Young Jimmy (as he was referred to at the time) took an interest in music, drawing influence
from virtually every major artist at the time, including B.B. King, Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Buddy Holly, and Robert Johnson.
Entirely self-taught, Jimmy’s inability to read music made him concentrate even harder on the music he heard.

Al took notice of Jimmy’s interest in the guitar, recalling, “I used to have Jimmy clean up the bedroom all the time
while I was gone, and when I would come home I would find a lot of broom straws around the foot of the bed.
I’d say to him, `Well didn’t you sweep up the floor?’ and he’d say, `Oh yeah,’ he did.
But I’d find out later that he used to be sitting at the end of the bed there and strumming the broom like he was playing a guitar.”
Al found an old one-string ukulele, which he gave to Jimmy to play a huge improvement over the broom.

By the summer of 1958, Al had purchased Jimmy a five-dollar, second-hand acoustic guitar from one of his friends.
Shortly thereafter, Jimmy joined his first band, The Velvetones. After a three-month stint with the group,
Jimmy left to pursue his own interests. The following summer, Al purchased Jimmy his first electric guitar,
a Supro Ozark 1560S; Jimi used it when he joined The Rocking Kings.

In 1961, Jimmy left home to enlist in the United States Army and in November 1962 earned the right
to wear the “Screaming Eagles” patch for the paratroop division. While stationed at Fort Campbell, Kentucky,
Jimmy formed The King Casuals with bassist Billy Cox. After being discharged due to an injury he received
during a parachute jump, Jimmy began working as a session guitarist under the name Jimmy James.
By the end of 1965, Jimmy had played with several marquee acts, including Ike and Tina Turner, Sam Cooke,
the Isley Brothers, and Little Richard. Jimmy parted ways with Little Richard to form his own band,
Jimmy James and the Blue Flames, shedding the role of back-line guitarist for the spotlight of lead guitar.

Throughout the latter half of 1965, and into the first part of 1966, Jimmy played the rounds of smaller venues
throughout Greenwich Village, catching up with Animals’ bassist Chas Chandler during a July performance
at Caf‚ Wha? Chandler was impressed with Jimmy’s performance and returned again in September 1966
to sign Hendrix to an agreement that would have him move to London to form a new band.

Switching gears from bass player to manager, Chandler’s first task was to change Hendrix’s name to “Jimi.”
Featuring drummer Mitch Mitchell and bassist Noel Redding, the newly formed Jimi Hendrix Experience
quickly became the talk of London in the fall of 1966......

Duane Allman and Coricidin cold tablets...

Over the years, there have been several stories about guitarist Duane Allman and a bottle of Coricidin brand of cold tablets. There is a style playing where blues guitarists have used cutoff necks of wine bottles as a slide. It's different from a Hawaiian guitar or Western steel guitar as those instruments use a heavy bar of steel (often chromed steel) to create clear ringing tones. The glass slide has a totally different sound. It's not as bright as steel and often brings harmonics for a different texture or more colorful sound.
In the old days, they literally cut the necks of bottles using a file to score the glass and heat to temper the glass.
Worn on a finger, the 'Bottleneck' slide is a mainstay with blues-style guitarists.
Drawbacks to this are it's fragile. When dropped, you can be sure of it shattering... so keep a few handy when gigging. Or... buy one made of metal. It won't have the same sound as glass, but you won't be buying them every time you get careless and have one roll off your amplifier and break.
As legend has it, Duane found the empty bottle of Coricidin to be a perfect match for his style of playing.

This photo shows the original design and years later the bottle was changed to support child-proof caps. Coricidin is now sold in boxes of blister packs... no more glass.

The amazing thing is original Coricidin bottles fetch prices upwards of $150.
Replica bottles were also available.

Photos of Duane playing slide show he wears it on his ring finger.

Here's a short video of Jeff Massey explaining some of the techniques used by Duane. He's using a slide made from porcelain used on his pinky finger.

The trick wasn't the pills... it was the bottle they came it!

When I first saw you, I saw love....

You’re Still the One
Song by Shania Twain
OverviewLyricsListenOther recordings Videos.

When I first saw you, I saw love
And the first time you touched me, I felt love
And after all this time
You're still the one I love, mmm, yeah-yeah
Looks like we made it
Look how far we've come, my baby
We mighta took the long way
We knew we'd get there someday
They said, "I bet they'll never make it"
But just look at us holding on
We're still together, still going strong, mm
You're still the one I run to
The one that I belong to
You're still the one I want for life
(You're still the one)
You're still the one that I love
The only one I dream of
You're still the one I kiss goodnight
Ain't nothin' better
We beat the odds together
I'm glad we didn't listen
Look at what we would be missin'
They said, "I bet they'll never make it"
But just look at us holding on
We're still together, still going strong
oh
You're still the one I run to
The one that I belong to
You're still the one I want for life
(You're still the one)
You're still the one that I love
The only one I dream of
You're still the one I kiss goodnight
You're still the one
Yeah (you're still the one)
You're still the one I run to
The one that I belong to
You're still the one I want for life, oh yeah
(You're still the one)
You're still the one that I love
The only one I dream of
You're still the one I kiss goodnight
I'm so glad we made it
Look how far we've come, my baby

Dark Wave... Japanese Gothic Metal music

A while back I bookmarked a video of a Japanese metal band called Yousei Teikoku and I again listened to it tonight. Their genre is a cross over of Gothic Metal, Dark Wave and Symphonic Metal.
Having seen a few Japanese performers, they are unlike American Metal artists who appear noisy and sloppy. The Japanese players are fast, precise and very articulated.
Mostly sung in Japanese, a few videos have some phrases in English.
Always tastefully done with the set, filming, lighting, props, clothing and instruments. It's something I would listen to again.
I followed a few of their social media and website links, but there isn't too much to be found. Nearly all of it is in Japanese.

The song in my head...

Flashback to 1968 and I was going to high school by day and a musician in a garage band by night. I enjoyed school with the exception of a few subjects. Typically, it was lousy teachers for that. My older brother remembered many of the ones I got.
Anyway, to pass the time I would 'rehearse virtually' long before personal computers and internet allowed us to do that.
In my head I could go through a 40 minute set, which was perfect as most of my classes lasted 40 minutes!

Since then, I cannot recall not having the ability to 'play' a song in my head.

Having blogged about people who cannot work without music playing, depending on what I'm doing... I could be the opposite. At work, I'm paid to do a job and need to focus.
The last thing I need is to have music (any music) as a distraction.
Maybe if I'm putting stock on shelves in a warehouse or painting can I get lost in music and not have it interfere with my job.

The one contradiction is the music in my head. If I'm driving in my car, listening to music and go into the house... there's a really good chance that last song I listened to is still playing in my virtual jukebox. If I have no distractions, I'll play the song in my head and it will be there when I wake up!

Currently, I'm 'listening' to Emerson Lake and Palmer The Endless Enigma. It started this weekend when I did a YouTube marathon on ELP.

Absolutely a great song... I could listen to it for days!
