The Mick Hucknall / Simply Red Music Blog

As another file for me (and you) to find a collection of music.
This one is for music performed by Simply Red and/or the lead vocalist of the band, Mick Hucknall.

Simply Red is on the cusp of jazz with strong influences of soul, pop and to a lessor degree rock.
Mick is one of the best male vocalists, of his time. His band contained proficient musicians in tight performances. My guess is the name of the band was inspired by Mick's (originally long) red hair.
In addition from a couple of his songs, it seems his nickname may have been Red, when he was younger, due to the same hair.

Apparently, I wasn't too far off;

Perhaps the following somber song of lament of times past,
was his most popular, featuring Mick's voice and a subtle muted trumpet. It was inspired by Mick's childhood. His mother & father broke up, when Mick was only 3 years old;

I'm in Love........with a woman already in a relationship, in fact a few of them.

And this isn't the first time. Now, before you scold me, this time it's different.
The other times, the gals were at least separated from their husband.
In this instance, she spends a lot of her time less than 2 feet from her partner. Well, that hasn't stopped me, even though she doesn't even know, that I exist. I guess you might call this a case of unrequited love.
But, it gets a little weirder. Because I've never even met her and she's in her 30's.
Plus, I don't love all of her, just her voice.

I'd like you to meet Rachel Price and this is where I first 'met' her;

MERC MUSIC

Everyone adopts the music of others and creates a soundtrack for their lives (unless you are one of the rare and talented few to make your own music).

Jungle Work

Of course, you remember the song that you adopted as "our song" between you and your sweetheart. In the late 1970's I had missed going to Vietnam (too young at the time), and was frustrated to no end that then-President Jimma Carter was on a world-wide surrender tour, pulling the rug out from under our allies, surrendering the Panama Canal, Iran, Southern Africa, Central America and any place he could surrender to the Soviets or Chi-Coms of radical Muslims.

Certain countries, however, still were holding their own and even winning against Communist forces, such as the South Africans, Rhodesians and SW Africans. America was not officially involved in those countries. Indeed, Jimma Carter was busy undercutting them as well.

But there is a little known but time-honored tradition of Mercenary, Soeldner or Francs-tireurs. They had both noble and ignoble reasons for going to war before their own government actually got involved.

During the Revolutionary War, we had Germans, French and Poles fighting with us and at the very top ranks. Americans would later go on to serve in the French Air Force in the First World War in Lafeyette Escadrille (Squadron), in the Guardia Nacionale against the Sandino Guerillas during the Banana Wars in Central America, for the British and Nationalist Chinese against the Germans and Japanese before Pearl Harbor (Eagle Squadron and the Flying Tigers, respectively).

The Cold War was called that because an open conflict between the US and the Soviets or the US and the Red Chinese could easily have escalated into full-blown nuclear war. And as they said in WARGAMES, the only way to win a Nuclear War is not to fight it.

So it was War by Proxy. Wars fought in Third World Countries, using private armies for us, arming, backing and training Communist guerillas and terrorists for them. (for the most part, we were defending, containing Soviet aggression).

And various points I toyed with the idea of going to fight overseas in certain units, and had even been in a recruiting station for the French Foreign Legion in Paris.

But an old, war-torn vet suggested just joining the Corps and hope to get lucky, because if caught fighting under a foreign flag, you could lose your American citizenship (now, who came up with that new, hare-brained rule?).

Nonetheless, I needed a soundtrack, and the first on the list of MERC ("MERK" short for 'Mercenary') MUSIC was Warren Zevon's STRENGTH AND MUSCLE AND JUNGLE WORK. Kinda tongue-in-cheek funny, but great to drink gin to, in some sweaty bar in Mombasa.

Tribute To Karen

Karen Carpenter has been called one of the best female vocalists of the 20th Century by a number of influential publications as diverse as Rolling Stone Magazine and National Public Radio.

Sir Paul McCartney called her the best female vocalist ever, saying that she was "the best female voice in the world: melodic, tuneful and distinctive."

She performed with her brother Richard as the group, "The Carpenters".
She was also a very talented drummer.

It is very sad that she died at the young age of 32 on Feb. 4, 1983 after she became anorexic.

She had a velvety contralto voice, pitch perfect on every note and never missed a beat.

Her voice was rich, full-bodied, silky smooth and pure.

She had a quality to her voice that no one can lay claim to. So expressive and lush with a deep and soulful sophistication, while at the same time sounding casual and effortless.

Enjoy !

Londonderry Air (Danny Boy)

The lyrics of the song “Danny Boy” were written by an English lawyer Frederic Weatherly in 1910. The melody or tune, however, existed centuries before as an old Irish air.

“Ayre, also spelled air, genre of solo song with lute accompaniment that flourished in England in the late 16th and early 17th centuries.”
- Encyclopaedia Britannica.

Weatherly modified his lyrics to fit the rhyme and metre of this air which was named Londonderry Air in 1894 by Katherine Tynan Hinkson who set the words of her “Irish Love Song” to it.

Irish Love Song

Would God I were the tender apple blossom
That floats and falls from off the twisted bough
To lie and faint within your silken bosom
Within your silken bosom as that does now.
Or would I were a little burnish'd apple
For you to pluck me, gliding by so cold,
While sun and shade your robe of lawn will dapple,
Your robe of lawn and your hair of spun gold.

Londonderry Air

The original air is believed to date back to Rory Dall O'Cahan, a blind Irish harpist who lived in Scotland in the late 17th century.
Folk legend says that Rory, having collapsed drunk one night by the riverside, heard fairies performing a melody on his harp. He then performed the tune as O'Cahan's Lament.

It originated from County Londonderry in Ireland (now in Northern Ireland).
The place name Derry is an anglicisation of the old Irish Daire (Modern Irish Doire), meaning "oak-grove" or "oak-wood".
As with the city, its name is subject to the Derry/Londonderry name dispute, with the form "Londonderry" generally preferred by unionists and "Derry" by nationalists. British authorities use the name "Londonderry", while "Derry" is used by the Republic of Ireland.

Here is a harp version of the air, probably similar to that played by Rory Dall O'Cahan:

Although I have never been to Ireland and it is unlikely that I ever will, “Danny Boy” holds a very special place in my heart because of the sheer impact of its enchanting melody. Listening to it on the radio as a boy was an experience that captivated my attention and virtually took me to the scene where I could hear the haunting sound of the pipes calling in the glens and down the mountainsides.

My favourite version of it is one in which the focus is on the intonation and nuances of the singer's voice and not on any musical accompaniment.

It has been recorded by multiple artistes.

My favourite version by a male singer is by Johnny Mathis:

My favourite version by a female singer is by Deanna Durbin:

What is the original message and meaning of song?
Here are some meanings attributed to it:
–a parent sending a son off to war
–a mother/father saying goodbye to a son
–a girl saying goodbye to her sweetheart

What are your thoughts on “Danny Boy”?

Do you have a favourite singer's version of it?
Please share it with others by posting the video.
Or just state the singer. Others can post the video for you.

I welcome input, particularly from our Irish friends, of any additional information, including historical details, re “Danny Boy”.

John Denver

This song is very under rated and has such beautiful thoughts expressed.
Annies Song - John Denver
When I hear this song it makes me think deep and wish I could feel this way about a woman, but reality hits once this song stops, because I don't think a modern woman has what it take's to find the key to my heart
