New Year's Resolutions.....

...We often make them. I've been lucky enough to have kept mine. Less so due to my strength of character, as to wisely choosing ones I actually have a prayer of keeping. Recently, serially, had a chance to chat with a few (Millennial) relatives at family holiday feed bag. Contrary to trying wisely to avoid topics of religion, wealth or politics, I wandered into heated discussions of the last of these, typically between older and younger family members and partners. Several such groups around the expansive multiple drawing rooms of the Vierk mansion. Most with adult beverages in hand. And already in the belly. And the blood streams. Past the blood brain barriers, as well. Managed to do much more listening than talking, so avoided getting embroiled. Or boiled. Reason the good Lord gave us all two ears, and only one mouth. But I digress. Several recent college grads had much to say about the virtues of socialism/communism, and more like AOC, and her ilk, their styles, voices, gestures and knowledge bases, they couldn't be. I got blank stares, from both young and old, whenever I sheepishly tried to raise, for discussion, a number of concepts and terms. Planned economies. Ownership of means of production. values of work. Landed verses rural proletariats. Proletarian as a term itself. The Hegelian dialectic. The long standing success rate of such political systems. How Scandinavia, and now certainly the PRC, hardly qualify politico-economically. Quality of consumer products vs military hardware. Contracts in law, inflation/real asset reserves and Party vs.worker qualities of life, in different systems.. Air/water/airwave/print media pollution. And much more. Duh!. So my first resolution for the new year is to rapidly assess the depth of knowledge of folks I am chatting with, and to quickly shift away from trying to have real discussions, where we both parties might learn, to less idea oriented niceties. Getting pretty good at the latter, as all can see by my writing here.

What difference would this make?

Someone sent me a message asking if I am watching America. I wasn't.

Anyway.. With all due respect to George Floyd and sympathies to his family, I am finding it difficult to digest what I see.

As all the other previous times, Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner or any other black life lost at the hands of a law enforcement personnel, the protests, riots and vandalism will come to pass.

After the fires go down, the body joins the dust, the lives will go on as usual for all the protesters. Even his family will carry on, with a void in their lives.

While it is quite obvious there is racial discrimination towards black people in some parts of the world, by some individuals, I really don't know if it would change, or if there is a way to change things with laws and bills.

As months and years go by, other than the officer/officers standing trial, and being convicted, would there be any real change?

Is that enough?

Can ideological supremacy or racial discrimination be uprooted from a society ?

I have no answers but questions.

All I know is, every life matter. We all feel the same fear and cry when we leave the comfort and safety of a mother's womb. We all breathe the same air. We all walk this earth for a God given time, with nothing but death at the end of our journeys.

Respect, justice and equality for another life can't birth anywhere else better than our own hearts. I wish your death opened more hearts than all the fires started.

Rest in peace George Floyd. sad flower

God bless the USA.
