Steven or Stephen...

Not to offend any one named Steven or Stephen. Pronouncing names differently than their spelling isn't a strong point of mine. If you spell your name Steven I'll call you 'stee-vin' and if you spell your name Stephen, I'll call you 'steff-in' but... maybe that should be 'step-hen' I don't really know.

There must be some European origin to the name Stephen that says it should be pronounced 'stee-vin' and stranger to that is using the nickname 'Steve' for someone who spells their name Stephen. Hey Step, how ya doin?

While I'm at it, Sade is usually pronounced 'sha-day' and not Sadie or 'saa-dee'

I want to blog, but

I don't know what to blog about.

There are 3 more Star Trek TV shows coming. Piccard is supposed to be the next one. About the man's adventures after he retires from Star Fleet. Star Trek Discovery, Season 3 after Piccard season 1 ends. Then Section 31 will get it's own series (Yay! Section 31 is so cool, time traveling assassins or medlers. The dark side of maintaining an Empire or a Federation.) All 3 are filming now. Also coming are 'Short Treks' Little one hour stand alone episodes about life in the Federation. Tribbles are coming back. AND carnivorous Tribbles you really don't want breeding on your star ship.

I have / had an acquaintance of 25 years. A guy named Ricky. In the mid 1990s I acquired some rental townhouses in the nearby town and joined their HOA and somehow soon became the President. Ricky's mom owned one of the townhouses in the development. She died and then Ricky owned it. He was a poly abusing drunk. Heroin, cocaine, meth, etc. I received complaints about him at least once a month. Noise, sleeping nude on the porch, excessive traffic coming and going, all the fun stuff. Plus frequent lateness regarding quarterly assessments. I had to deal with him a lot. Poor Ricky couldn't hold a job so when sober he did odd jobs. Mowing for neighbors, tree cutting, roofing repairs, clearing stopped up toilets for folks who would rather pay Ricky a few gallons of gasoline than hire a licensed plumber, etc. Most of it in the community. Ricky spent a lot of his Sundays in the local jail for being drunk in public on Saturdays, etc. His wife found someone sober and departed with his kid. Eventually someone got him into a program. It took a decade but Ricky eventually dried out and changed his ways. There was a lumber company and they hired him a lot to fell big trees on a property they had in Maryland. Also a local privately owned recreational park had him on their staff part time, picking up trash, directing visitors, collecting gate fees, etc. Small town and we had acquaintances and friends in common. When Ricky had gotten straight and I was no longer an HOA member (having sold those properties after my wife deceased) I ran into Ricky a few times on social occasions. I won't say we were good friends, but we were friendly. He was actually a nice guy and a lot of folks liked him. Two weeks ago after cutting down some large poplars they were stacked for shipping. While everyone was waiting for the crane to arrive Ricky decided to trim the branches sticking out from one of them. He had almost 40 years of experience. He warned the rest of the crew to stay back in case the logs rolled. Then he started cutting. A witness told me suddenly something moved and they yelled to Ricky but at first he couldn't hear them over the saw noise. Then he must have noticed it too because he turned to run, then turned back to pick up the saw before starting away. Then he stumbled and 3 16,000 pound logs rolled over him and death was virtually instantaneous. John told me, if he hadn't gone back for the saw I think he would have made it.
We held the memorial last Saturday. Cremated of course. John described him as looking like a tree frog someone had stomped with a boot. Ugh. Definitely nothing for an open coffin. There was no Workmen's Compensation payment because poor Ricky was a 1099 contract employee. The lumber company paid for Ricky's body to be transported down from the Baltimore ME office and the cremation and also the service as his now grown son has his own issues and no money for such things. About 200 people attended the half hour service (yes, me too). We did a small collection for the son. Some folks I knew, some I didn't. Ricky was the common thread. He had no Internet presence, so the photos for the service were kind of few, maybe 5 or 6 covering 30 years. I stood there looking at the little wooden box containing his ashes and wondered about our place in life.

Getting on a plane with bedroom slippers...

I saw a video tonight with a woman throwing a temper tantrum at the airline ticket booth. That's one problem to itself. The other problem is she was wearing bedroom slippers.
I'll wager that airlines have listed what can and cannot be worn when attempting to board a plane and it wouldn't surprise me if wearing flip-flops, thin lace-up sandals or bedroom slippers makes it to that list. Passenger comfort is one thing, setting yourself up for failure is another.
The movable ramp that leads to the plane often has carpeted flooring and a good place to catch your shoe when there is a height difference from adjoining sections and I recall one woman had her sandal catch and break off as she boarded the plane. Her other shoes were in he luggage probably in the belly of the plane waiting to take off. Think ahead lady.

People don't consider panic and 'push-comes-to-shove' crowd situations. They are probably the ones who complain their freedoms are being taken away when that are forced to wear closed toe shoes. That's a cousin to wearers of tank-top shirt...

Picture Cards

When I was at junior school, we used to buy bubble gum that came with picture cards. The ones I remember were a series about World War 2, Mars Attacks and the American Civil War. Some of the pictures were very gory, many of them depicting scenes of extreme violence. Such images would certainly not be sold to children nowadays, although, strange as it might seem, being exposed to them neither caused anyone any trauma nor produced any homicidal maniacs in later life.

The American Civil War series is the one I remember most clearly. In the little pack would be a flat, square piece of pink bubble gum, several picture cards and a pretend US bank note. The subject of the American Civil War certainly captured our schoolboy imaginations for the duration of their being on sale. For the playground bullies, they were like a gift from the gods. They would run up to some defenceless little soul and demand to know if he was “Union or Confederate”. There was no way of knowing where the bully’s allegiance lay, and if yours happened not to coincide with it, there were consequences. I don’t remember exactly what the consequences were, but I’m pretty sure it involved a measure of being roughed up.

Thunberg Lecture Required To Buy Fuel

New Law Requires You To Listen To Greta Thunberg Lecture Before Purchasing Gasoline

October 7th, 2019
U.S.—A series of new bills working their way through state legislatures in New York, California, Oregon, Hawaii, and several other progressive states will require you to listen to a Greta Thunberg lecture before purchasing gasoline.

Motorists will be required to watch a 20-minute lecture by the 16-year-old climate activist before they purchase gallons and gallons of harmful fossil fuels.

"We want to make sure drivers are informed," said California Governor Gavin Newsom, who says he will sign the bill into law. "So we are having them get lectured by a 16-year-old so they will have all the facts before they do something rash like put gasoline in their cars to go to work."

Once the driver has listened to Thunberg's entire lecture, they will be prompted to complete a quick, fifteen-question quiz to show they understand how horrible they are for driving a car. Drivers who get at least 80% will then be allowed to refuel their vehicles. As they refuel, the screen will simply play a clip of Thunberg saying, "How dare you!" over and over again.

The law will not apply to celebrities purchasing jet fuel.

The British election....a cautionary tale....

...for American liberals. Behind Boris' mandate victory lies a philosophy of belief in ourselves, beginning with the Founding Fathers (no girlies need apply), and extending to Ronaldo Magnus, and now our MAGA Brilliant President Trump. Anathema to the racist political pandering pols of all but the most justified and temporary welfare/dole handouts, it's a core life philosophy for folks who are really honest about such beliefs. Indeed, voters in the English former industrial north, now increasingly with cities resembling our own democrat ruled failed metropolises, were a big force in this election of a conservative---they had voted left for generations up until now. Oye como va, o mis campesinos. Rising crime, government over-regulation, PC, vanishing middle and lower class jobs, food pantries, homeless shelters, runaway inflation, decreasing adjusted incomes, porous borders making it all worse,-----anyone seen any of the same here, at least until the last 3 years? So now this British conservative mandate is also a mandate for a quick Brexit, finally honoring the will of the voters there. If you wonder why the distaste for capricious rule by unelected ueber lib bureaucrats in Brussels, and what the liberals here have always planned for the USA, try to spend a few leisurely afternoons sauntering about in Chicago, or LA. Just be sure to be carrying a pair of Glock nines, and extra clips.
