u2Kitty: To me there is NO excuse, whether rich or poor to use any humans for medical experiments. In many cases they are not even informed that they are participating in an experiment and that the experiment can`t even be given the benefit of the doubt.

MO

u2Kitty..that IS indeed, the case!!

The Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment was one, this Guatemalan STD study is another, not to mention the studies done on the mentally ill. Many of the medications that the mentally ill are given, state that a side affect is death.

I guess, to some people and the pharma companies, death is preferable to being mentally ill. While you are alive, there is always hope, but if you're mentally ill, "here take this pill, it may cause your death, but that's the price you pay," according to pharmaceutical companies and doctors, etc.

Simply put, certain people are "dispensable."

What? People who are dying being given an experimental drug? Probably out of desperation. In any case, hardly a small pox hidden in blankets scenario or U.S. medical researchers intentionally giving Guatemalans gonorrhea and syphilis.

Medsummer: Bella if your so angry at America, go move to a country that hasn't hurt anyone in secret.

I have the right to express MY opinion. You don't have to like it, you don't have to agree with it and you certainly don't have to read it!

However, I will state that you can take your suggestion to me and shove it you know where!

They did learn that pencillin (new at the time) had a positive effect on the STD, Bella. How many since have been aided and cured from quick application of pencillon to STDs since? Numbers we don't know. But allot I bet.

Human testing is always the final stage of any drug development program. You have to know for sure that is works on the human subject.

I agree that the introduction of STC into humans was uncalled for. There were others with diagonised STDs that the human testing could have been done on.

But put it into time frame some. Post WWII period. They had 5m American men returning from the combat theatres. Bringing everything from Dungy fever, to Malaria, to STDs home to the US. They needed to know right then......what would work and was effective to combat them. Else they could easily have a mass break out of diseases in the US.

You had 50m Americans that were facing the diseases that American soldiers were bring back into the country. Knowing the penicillon was effective drug for STDs....likely saved many lives here and abroad.

Yes many during that period were considered 'dispensable'. It was how wars were won then.

u2Kitty:
And heres 1 example from page 2:

The United States sends 1.7 million members of the armed forces, 22 percent of whom are African-American, to the Persian Gulf for the War ("Desert Storm"). More than 400,000 of these soldiers are ordered to take an experimental nerve agent called pyridostigmine, which is later believed to be the cause of Gulf War Syndrome -- ranging from skin neurological disorders, incontinence, uncontrollable drooling and vision problems -- affecting Gulf War veterans (Goliszek; Merritte,' target='_blank'>http://www.bsos.umd.edu/gvpt/lawonl... et al.).

Being ordered is different from being asked and informed (in my wold perspective)

What was that drug designed to do I wonder?

u2Kitty:
If you dive into the drug methamphetamine - you`ll find that it was given to soldiers to make them fell invincible. (This drug was created in WW2)
So the question is if you mean dying before or after these experiments

No. I mean where is the heinous experiments spoken of in the OP that are being conducted? Providing an anti nerve gas drug to soldiers is hardly heinous given the percieved threat. If they were not ordered to take this and there was an attack then one would be wondering what the hell was wrong with the military for not providing it.

In fact, if I recall, there was much ado about body armor not being provided to soldiers and one of the reasons was that the armor they could have provided was still in testing. Strange how one is bad and the other wrong for not providing it. doh

Figure out the best thing that country has got (freedom of speech and press) and give it a swirl.

Just a read book.....yes, I really do....it was on the Siege of Troy by the Greeks. After the battle was over with. One of the legendary storytellers of the time....was telling nasty and truthful stories of the High King of the Greeks.

On hearing of the stories and of the storyteller, the High King had him blinded and cut off his ears. The High King said that was for lying about him and his great victory at Troy. Censorship was tough in those days....
