kizzy27: Hi Merri , Isnt it up to the individual to deal with his or her own political cultural & religious beliefs?
Australia is multicultural now each person has the right to do & be whomever they wish It is not up to others to be on guard as to not offend , It is upto the person to stick to their own code of practice !
If I offer the muslum lady a ham sanga , she can always say no thanks !
Thats what people forget , we are Australian, we are free, there are no restraints , just be who you want to be and respect others & we will be your mates,Oh and lets not forget the Aussie code of giving a nick name Ali abdulah suriati rudditia might just have to become Ruddo Its the Aussie way ....

There's a Muslim doctor at this place I visit for work whose name is Mohammed. The other doctors brazenly call him 'Mozza'doh...Yep, the Aussie way.laugh

The thing is Kizzy, you are quite right in what you say, but then, you see, if we are to integrate... makes it hard doesn't it...We are a multicultural country, but we are apples and pears... all not really sitting comfortably in the fruitbowl... not when you get to know the differences. Core values are just hugely different.

but do we have to integrate? Everyone doesnt have to be the same, just everyone has to accept each other differences, and that acceptance goes both ways, not just "us" accepting "them"

We have named uniforms at work, we get to choose the name we are known by, these as a few self appointed changes, Dmitiri = Jim, Roshan = Stewie, Hsung = Josie, Imitiaz = Inzy, and a few others besides. And then we place nicknames on them as well!

If we get too hung up on maybe offending someone arent we then creating a distance between us? Actually demonstrating that they are different? Everyone has the right to say no I dont wish to eat that, or no I dont agree with that, and just because one doesnt like it doesnt mean all should be denied their right to enjoyment.

While in college, I had the idea to not list my religion as everyone else did. If I come across any form today that asks for my religion, I still use one of two answers: Pedestrian or Motorist.
The admin clerk assumed that for Pedestrian, I meant Protestant, I told her no, I had nothing to protest for or against. When I put down Motorist, I told them that I just loved and worshiped my 1933 Plymouth... Counselors just thought I was 'strange'...laugh One day I came to the admissions office to fill out a new form and listed my religion as Motorist. They thought that I had meant Methodist...laugh Wrong! I told them that I just loved and worshiped my 1933 Plymouth... They left me alone and never asked for anymore forms. (On psychological tests I always listed my favourite colour as Technicolour. They all left me alone. On a television interview on a very controversial topic, I was asked for any final thoughts... I summed up my views with "Let the world linger on my middle finger...", many in the audience just clapped and laughed, and cheered...works all the time. Just keep things simple.wine

Merriweather: Religion/cultural habits/ first names, surnames etc. of all topics. ..

I am amazed that after not having to include in my thoughts for the last 50 odd years religion..

Growing up, we just did not ask our friends, nor neighbors what religion they were, and just assumed that people had their own beliefs in what ever religion they were christened in... or not.. Just never went there with the topic..

Now I find, that religion has crept into my daily life, either because of current affairs, or because of work colleagues, or from the people that I see on a day to day basis...

I find it almost a study when it comes to cultural norms, that I now have to be mindful that I dont offer anyone a sandwich because it may contain meat, that I cant offer a bowl of food about the office, because its someone's day to be honoring someone or something, so its a fasting day... then, of course, there are days, when colleagues dont show, because its a sharing of food day, or festival day, where they sit home and cook to share..

I am NOT saying any of this is wrong, I just look back and see how much change is happening..and wonder how much more to come..?

Re names, we just say our first and surnames, we dont take on our mothers surnames, or grandmothers surname, (when married), and dont have our husbands, and we dont usually worry about all the names in the middle.. and we dont usually allow our in-laws to name our babies.. Gosh, I am getting right mixed up with all of this... anyone else feel the same. ??

Oh, and for some cultures, I get so confused to which is the first, second and third & or fourth name, because they mix them all up and use some or all of them...

Thoughts please... is anyone else as confused as me...

Hi Merri its good to see you are finally questioning what I have been preaching for years. laugh

This is how I think it all works. A child in the playground does not judge by colour or religion, all they want is a playmate for a day. I think we were those children in the playground many moons ago in our infancy of ignorance. While it was out there long way away in other countries where ethnic cleansing was in full swing along with all other bigotry. It didn’t matter to us because it wasn’t happening in our own playground. Well at least the working class wasn’t aware of it, but it was happening on a smaller scale of course. Yugoslavs, Italians, Greeks, Turks, Irish ..etc were at war, many are still fighting that same fight. And than 911 happened and the UK subway bombings, so did the rising of consciousness, that not all was good out there and that no good is now at our door step with a great potential to harm us physically, emotionally, take way our values our freedom and our way of life. They certainly have done that along with some of our doing by trying to accommodate for all rather than all respecting our values and our way of life. Try going to the middle east and carry on like they do here… pffft
I honestly believe and for a good reason that Muslim, Jewish and Christianity is the rotten bacteria that continuously cause harm to human plant and animal life in our finite world.

re: names

Some of it has to do with security, some of it with fraud and some of it is cultural and some of it is total stupidity. Like the moviesstars that give their children names as big as their ego. doh

Hi AA...

Yes, you are right, I am certainly questioning it all... seems like everyday something occurs to make me more and more aware.. and perhaps its because I think, well, yes, we do need to integrate, that in my opinion is a given, because the way it is now, we can only guess at what is occurring, and its like we live in this country, but we are in darkness... and by that I mean, if things are happening that we dont know about... then somehow I dont think that is a good thing...

It is extremley difficult to put into words what I am thinking... just an unsureness, and I think we need to be sure and feel safe..

But Hey, I could be completely wrong.

The language barriers, the fact that some of the people that come here, have had a hell of a life, that then tells me, that they must be carrying ideals, and their own learned behaviours with them, and because they are now living perhaps a better life style, we dont know what it is that is really going on ... dunno AA... just to hard to verbalise...

But I dont think its just as simple as saying, alrighty, just let live and we continue on the way we have always done..

They day these folk become our pollies... I think that will be a wakeup call.. sorry if I sound so uncertain...

I take my pets to the vet when they don't seem well. As my pets have never really bothered to learn to speak English, I have to tell the vet what I see wrong with them. Next pet I get must speak English so that he/she can tell the vet what is wrong rather than me having to guess.

I have been dealing with many different ethnic (for want of a better word) groups for many years. Some do not understand, some don't want to understand, some just use this as an excuse for their behaviour.

Where does it say that someone who ended up here as a 9yo from some other country/culture can at 25 use the excuse that they have suffered torment and torture to excuse being drunk (3rd recorded time) at 9am and ploughing a car into a school injurying children.frustrated can use this as an excuse for something that is not communly accepted here in Aust.australia

there is nothing simple about it anymore because its out of control. How are you going to protest agonist 5 million immigrants who don’t agree with you and another 15 million who don’t give a damn and expect for you voice to be heard?

One thing tho AA...when I walk to my building in the morning from the train station, I pass a group of men who have made this particular spot their morning meeting place... they are gathered, most of them having a smoko... and the numbers seem to be increasing...

Now this is well strange, because when the Italians, Greeks, and even Vietnamese came to live here, the men often had a woman besides them, which we perceived as normal..... but to see largish groups of men now, sorta reminds me of looking at the news clips from os.. men ready to protest, ready to fight, so I guess its just my own association.

so I guess it's just me, gathering from the responses, no-one else seems particularly worried.. dunno
