I created this thread for people on the East Coast to report conditions that are occurring in their area as this massive hurricane bears down on us. Let us know what's going on in your area such as rain intensity, wind speed, damages, temperature, or anything of interest to others such as trees down etc.
PLEASE don't clog the thread with well wishes and 1 on 1 chats or I'll ban you from the thread. This could be a deadly storm so lets keep the banter to a minimum.
I'll start by saying that in my area of Virginia about 60 miles due west of Chesapeake Bay and 100 miles from the Atlantic, the temp is 60f 16c. The wind comes in waves from dead calm to brisk enough to blow the dead leaves off the trees. No rain yet. The sky is solid Grey. Interstate 95 the main north south highway that runs from New England to Florida (150 yards from my house) is light in both directions. Barometer reads 29.36.

Well, I just heard on the radio that a good deal of coastal communities in NJ are under mandatory evacuation. 101.5 FM is giving regular updates on evacuations, shelters, conditions, etc. Apparently the storm surge is already over 2.5 ft at the shore, and the storm is still 400 mi. away.
As for my area, I've got the same conditions as Ooby at the moment. Intermittent wind, dark clouds, no rain yet, but it seems to be the calm before the storm.

I am in the Ohio valley. The storm is predicted to just skirt us. With us getting the outsides edges. The problem is there are 2 other storm systems that are going to possibly combine with the remains of Sandy. Right now in our area it is cold and rainy, about 45 degrees. Wind guts predicted up to 70+ miles an hour. Right now they are about 15 to 20 mph. If Sandy moves further into PA it will not be good at all here. Flood warnings, wind warnings and storm watches are all up.

in columbus ohio I am west of where the worst of the conditions are supposed to be. We have had 3 days of rain from another front out of the west - today (day 4 ) is still gloomy and rainy - this front is supposed to meet up with Sandy and dump high winds and snow over eastern ohio and western Pa. I wouldn'r be surprised to see some light snow as far west a cols because the temperatures dropped precipitously yesterday, Oh and the wind has picked up.

I have been resding the reports all week and have read that the coastal areas are supposed to get the hurricane. I think Tues. is supposed to be the worst of it. I read that utility companies in easter Ohio, NJ, and western Pa have been cacelling personal leaves for workers and contacting "sister" companies in the midwest to line up potential extra workers for any emergencies and making arrangements for their stay if they are "imported"

Some folks here are storing up groceriess batteries and candles etc

Just checked out this a few minutes ago as the storm pertains to my area...

From what I'm reading, the impact will bring a lot of rain with a potential for flooding, and high winds. The best we can do is keep ourselves posted on updates as the storm progresses. In 1954, Hurricane Hazel did a number on Toronto and I'm hoping this storm is not a repeat of that. I found the comments posted in the link to be pretty amusing...almost as award winning as the CS forums. rolling on the floor laughing

The temperature is 57 degrees, wind is picking up a little bit, sky is light and drak grey.

The town I live in always floods with these type of storms which means my basement floods. With Hurricaine Irene I had water in the basement but was saved from it getting up into the house because of the subpump. If I lose power, which is likely, I'll lose the subpump and will be forced to call the fire/police dept. That will be a nuisiance because I'm still using a walker to get around after my surgery. I'm making a list...and checking it twice...dancingsanta of what I should take if I have to be saved laugh by a handsome fireman...

Seriously, it would be very dangerous for my knee to have to be in flood water because flood water carries germs and many other things to gross to mention. If my knee gets an infection, I will be in deep, deep trouble. sigh

Governor Christie will be speaking soon but so far we know that certain areas of NJ have to evacuate including Cape May, which is the tip of NJ. Atlantic City casinos are closed.

The cloud of the storm is 1,000 miles from end to end. New Jersey is 1,000 miles from Florida....that's a big area for the surge to cover with water.

The question is still open if airports in NJ and NY will be closed. As someone else said mass transportation in NY (my neighbor) will stop at 7 pm tonight and certain areas have mandatory evacuation.

My biggest worry is that I will lose electricity and my subpump won't work.

I'll get back to you Ooby when Governor Christie gives us an update.

I rode out hurricane Belle on Staten Island in 1976.
My house was just a couple blocks from the shore and the eye passed just a few miles offshore.
Other than tree limbs falling there wasn't much damage.
It rained a lot but there was no major flooding.

My friend lives on Long Island in New York, and I haven't heard from her in several days. She gets a lot of "lake effect" weather from the Great Lakes, and if that weather combines with this storm, she could be in a lot of trouble. She lives on the upper floor in a house that's about 150 years old. Her brother works for the power company, so he's likely to be very busy.

Well I'm located right on target of this thing. Maryland. So far as of 1:10 PM sunday, some rain,, dark clouds,, the calm before the storm,,, I'm ready. Been through these before. Usually loose power but I have a generator and my trusty wood stove and lots of wood.

Obama can't be blamed for the hurricane. Neither could Bush.

Blame is only for what they do, or don't do.

Depending on length of power loss, one of these could save the day. Not sure if your sump pump is equipped with battery backup. Although, you might not be able to meet that handsome fireman. Decisions...Decisions....

Briefing by Governor Christie:

Schools are closed on Monday and maybe Tuesday
Train and bus service is suspended

President Obama called the Governor to tell him that FEMA is prepared to help out in anyway it can. We'll see...

Anybody who has lived in NJ knows that the Raritan River and Passiac Rivers are known for causing massive flooding. To avoid that the gates at water storage points have opened to let some of the water out in hopes of easing the flooding.

Right now it's wait n see. Winds are picking up but it won't become a concern until much later on tonight.

My subpump doesn't have battery backup. My apartment is in a private home and the subpump is the landlords responsibility. If he was concerned he should have come here to dump a pail of water in the well of the pump to make sure it turns on automatically. I would do that but I can't take my walker down the stairs....I shouldn't even be on the stairs.

Hiya Monts wave Keep yourself posted on the weather conditions and if there's any danger of getting stranded in flooding conditions in your place, get the heck out of there. I'd be on the horn to the owner of the house about having a battery backup connected to that sump pump not only for your benefit but for his. Stay safe hun...teddybear
