mollybaby: Intelligence Quotient - IQ
Do you know yours?
Would you base some of your self-worth on it?
Do you think it is an important measure of intelligence?
Why is it rarely used in job applications?
Would you base your interest in a potential partner on their IQ if it were an integral part of their profile?
Could it be as important as looks or employment or sense of humour?
How important is one's IQ?
Discuss..

I've no clue what my IQ is and probably wouldn't want to know. laugh I wouldn't use IQ as criteria for a potential partner although I think we would need to be somewhat on "the same page" to make it work. wave

Do you know yours? No.
Would you base some of your self-worth on it? Only if I score high.
Do you think it is an important measure of intelligence? The only one we have that I know of.
Why is it rarely used in job applications? Employers are likely more concerned about jobs skills and transferable skills.
Would you base your interest in a potential partner on their IQ if it were an integral part of their profile? If it were an integral part of their profile and it was low, I think they' re in trouble. Other than that no.
Could it be as important as looks or employment or sense of humour? It could be, but it' s not for me.
How important is one's IQ? If you can put 2 and 2 together I' m happy with that.
Discuss..
I will save the discussion for a later date.

Do you know yours? 163
Would you base some of your self-worth on it? Nope
Do you think it is an important measure of intelligence? Nope
Why is it rarely used in job applications? Not relevant for most jobs
Would you base your interest in a potential partner on their IQ if it were an integral part of their profile? Definite No
Could it be as important as looks or employment or sense of humor?
Not at all
How important is one's IQ? Not much, there are attributes that are far more important even when job hunting. IMO there is book smart and life smart. I find that life experiences, practical knowledge and personality are far more important. In relationships how you treat your partner and your devoted love to her/him outweighs any level of IQ. I am so thankful I was blessed with both, but my IQ has nothing to do with the person I am inside, but it has given a wealth of knowledge and in part a photographic memory for certain things important to me. I have an ability to learn which has been a blessing but I don't consider self made, I thank my parents for this.

I do know my IQ - I used to but can't remember (it was taken a long time ago and it was above average I think) I passed anyway...lol

my intelligence is among other things part of my self worth but not a specific test score.

I'd have to ask my HR rep about job application thing :) - alot of people are never tested so it would be a barrier IMO. Accomplishments and attitude are more important.

I'd want my partner to be reasonably bright, yes, but not as measured by a test, as measured by ones life, attitudes, accomplishmentsts and interests. a sense of humor is always a must regardless :)

I know what it was.
Yes.
Yes.
Most jobs don't require very much intelligence.
No, although like can attract like.
No, IQ achieves or contributes nothing in itself.
High IQ is necessarily important for professionals, very important for Da Vinci and Goethe, and extremely important to the pretentious.

M1ck1e: I know mine, and I don't put much stock into it, intelligence means nothing if you act like an idiot all the time. I wouldn't not hang out with someone because they have a low IQ. And if people got hired on their IQ scores, the world would be in trouble.

Very true. It might help with some things but remember criminals can also have a high IQ.

One thing I have noticed is that there are different IQ systems and measuring ways. The Americans that I talked to seem to use the one that gives the highest number... and simply can't be compared with others. A bit like how their pool tables have huge pockets and their dart boards have massive sections in them.

IQs are like college degrees. Some people get them and they still can't think. Some people do not have them and yet they are very capable.

Another example would be an autistic person. They are usually very intelligent and capable of deep thought, however, they cannot function in society.

Another aspect is the testing of IQ and the reliability of the test. Someone had to make that test and in doing so injected their own ideas and stereotypes of what intelligence is. Sometimes it is just language. Like in the movie Trading Places (Dan Ackroyd and Eddie Murphy) where the 2 old geezers are explaining what a Stock Exchange commodity trader is to Eddie (from the 'hood) and Eddie retorts "Oh, you mean a bookie".

Thus, I have no faith in that system, especially not for measuring interpersonal compatability.

Not really that simple.

You're forgetting to factor in the effect of gravity on the morris minor and how escaping earth's would reduce the acceleration for the first part of the journey, also resistance due to the earth's atmosphere and then there's the question of what happens once the morris minor enters a vacuum. Do we pretend that the internal combustion engine magically keeps working despite the lack of oxygen? And if so once it is accelerating in a vacuum you'll probably need to account for relativity in order to get a accurate answer.

I apologize for my Dr Sheldon Cooper moment.

I agree that it is no measure of interpersonal compatibality or common sense in any way.

I work with a lot of seriously intelligent people. I'd say their average IQ would be 140+. This i supposedly 'genius' level. But many of them would only be genius at their own specialised subject, and quite the opposite outside of it. In fact many are lost outside of it.

Of course, some others are excellent all-rounders, and have common sense, and can live happily in this world. They are in the minority.

I would also debate the fact that an IQ over 140 equates to genius. I know lots of people higher than than on the scale (I am talking the Mensa scale rather than the free internet IQ test scale! And would not consider themselves genius.
