(CNN) -- A Frenchman who was kidnapped over the weekend in Algeria appears to have been beheaded in a video that was posted online Wednesday.
The video shows armed men beheading a man who appears to be Herve Gourdel -- a man who the French foreign ministry said was kidnapped Sunday in Algeria's Tizi-Ouzou region east of Algiers.
In the video, the armed men claim to belong to Islamist militant group Jund al-Khilafa -- or Soldiers of the Caliphate -- in Algeria, and pledge allegiance to Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.
ISIS execution videos strikingly similar
The video -- titled "A message of blood for the French government" -- surfaced as French Prime Minister Manuel Valls addressed the French National Assembly, the country's lower house of parliament, about the fight against ISIS.
The French government did not immediately confirm the authenticity of the video.
If the video is verified it would be the latest videotaped beheading of a Westerner by an Islamist extremist group. American journalists Steven Sotloff and James Foley and British aid worker David Haines were beheaded by ISIS.
News of a possible new murder comes on the same day President Barack Obama addressed the United Nations, calling for all countries to unite against terrorism and brutality wrought by ISIS. The Islamic State in Iraq and Syria goes against everything Islam stands for, he said. Islam, the President, is about peace.

This is nothing new as far as tactics go; the old FLN were just as ruthless in fighting the French colonial army which did decrease once the Legion was engaged which fought them in just as a ruthless manner; the Russian Spetsnaz which went after the terrorists that blew up the US marine base in Beirut back in 1983 were so brutal that some turned themselves in to various pro US groups to face an easier execution. What is new is the use of foreigners by ISIS to carry out the beheadings, just as the Turks did when they had their version of a Caliphate and beheadings, dismemberments, etc. were an everyday ritual. Arabs have rarely done this , with perhaps the exception of those that came under the power of the Madhi back in Sudan in the 1884. There are many forms and degrees of torture which are usually the prerogative of the most fanatical elements in any conflict, with the majority not engaging in that type of ‘refined savagery’, saying that in regards to the Chinese who, despite being so civilized age wise, still resort to this as do their cruder cousins, the North Koreans. But have no illusions, the French can and have been as ruthless as ISIS is now, in their war against the FLN in Algeria and later against the OAS on directions from De Gaulle. When a war is of 'no quarter’, no one is above being the same to ‘fight fire with fire’. Those that see themselves as the perennial ‘good-guys’ end up being/ becoming just like their enemy. Shame, but that is one small consequence of warfare. Sadly, it is always the ‘elite forces’ of a country’s military that ends up in this type of ‘transition’. In covering wars, revolts, uprisings, etc. I’ve seen it in all of them. No one is immune.
All we can do is hope and pray that somehow Islamic leaders in communities and mosques can get through to the young men that could be at risk of joining Isis,
Alot of these men that join are isolated in their communities or at least feel that and these are the ones that need guidance and help from their Islamic leaders who do not share beliefs of Isis.

death penalty should be abolished in the west
what does that have to do with those Islamists? Do you think if the reminder of western Countries, few as they are, abolish the Death-Penalty,ISIS would miraculously lay down their Weapons and be come peaceful, nonviolent Citizens?

I may get shot for this but I find it hard to believe the media hype,, not saying these people are in any way not being murdered, but as to who is the murderer ? The only thing it seems to do is strengthen bonds between the allies like 9/11 but far far more controllable and not as many witnesses sorry if I hit a nerve its too hard to think about but soon its going to be too late! Its a bit like lee our drummer boy a defenceless young man murdered on camera in public within our shore the Irony of his position is too much almost to believe that these monsters who did it must have been more than, just targeting a soldier but we accept and allow the media to tell us whos behind attacks ....... love an hugs to all S&eM
