Why do the British say conTROversy putting the accent on the second syllable while at the same time they say CONtributing putting the accent on the first syllable? In both cases these words are pronounced wrong. No wonder when Brits speak they are so hard to understand.confused

I think you might get different pronunciations in different parts of England., The pronunciation and accent vary considerably, for example you probably wouldn't be able to understand a thick Newcastle accentgrin

Right in your own backyard, meaning the U.S., there is a group of people who say words differently then you and I do.

For instance, they say ... Open the doh for door

They say powlice (with a long O) instead of police. The way we say it is we turn the O into an A making it sound like pahlice.

As long as I know what someone means I don't have a problem with the way they say it.

However, I was having lunch with a friend and her friend one day. Her friend was from Scotland. When she finished speaking I asked my friend What did she say laugh Very difficult to understand.

Hang in there Oobs.

A thick Belfast accent is as difficult to understand as a thiclient Scottish accent.
