Different tastes for different folks I guess.

People tend to hate what they don't understand. Rap music does get a bad press due to the fact that most people seem to instantly think of Gangsta rap, as noticed earlier in the thread when Ice T was mentioned.
It has many sub-genres (at least 60), quite like any genre of music, ranging from Gangsta rap all the way through to Opera rap.
Listen to Eminem rapping about his daughter, and you've got to have at least a tiny bit of respect for his lyrical genius.

I quite like some rap, as the use of language as a language to express emotions and feelings is often better than any other spoken language, but I don't feel it is "Music" in the sense that we can call Mike Oldfield and Mozart musicians, they created music using instruments designed to make music. I don't think Eminem or T-ice etc could be called musicians.
To me, Rap should have its own genre and name, like Beat Poetry, it is more towards the poetic than musically aligned in my opinion. But without doubt, it should not be dismissed and much is amazing too.

I've got to be one of the most musically ignorant people on the planet (not to mention a chunk of frequencies missing from my hearing) and even I can work out that 'rap' covers a wide range of music.
I recommend listening to a bit of Scottish rap.

Poor dog... Anyway, music seems to be cultural and the older generations really have no choice, but to cling to the music that fed their hearts and souls from youth... I've never performed any River Dance, like that floor-stomper truheart. And I doubt that African-Americans know the top 40 list of today's country music. Thank ya Saint, I got to reading and thinking about this earlier when viewing some replies on my posts. I don't like rap and don't understand it but the people that do like it do understand it and appreciate its type of rhythm. Just like I like metal. People claim that don't understand what is being said. I do or I look it up and then I do.
I appreciate the energy that that type of music gives off. Oh hell. I freakin' love it! Yes, the older music was good. I appreciated it back then. Still like it, but don't choose to listen to it on a daily basis because I want the energy that I get off of the music I like now. SO, to say the newer generation music is trash is just not right. It's just different and to each his/her own.

It has ruined a lot of lives because young people adopts the lifestyle being glorified and they think thats how you have to be. Rock and metal can sometimes be dark too but very few people has ever acted out on it, not in the way they act out because of the influence of rap.

online today!Someone mentioned even a five year old can rap and yes, I also have heard a lot of children sing different types of music beautifully.
And yes like most music and art it is an outlet for emotions quite often. Thank goodness for an outlet. Some baggage in life is to heavy to carry.

Hi there
I like some rap music but not the rap music that is gang related or that degrades women or that is drug related. The older rap seems a little better to me than the newer rap. It's not my favorite music but I like some of it.

The reason why your generation hates rap music is because your generation is responsible for some of the best music to ever be released and rap in comparison is just trash.
