Is it this Lifey
Hi Monty!
When my family and I were in USA, we had (and have) some great friends and they were very typical American and we spent Christmas with them. The first Christmas there, we were in shock because of the many presents they got for everyone, including the four of us! My children were thrilled because they got lots of presents while here we used to get just one present and most of the times it would be home/hand made.
To this days I get not presents for anyone, not family or friends but if someone still insists in giving me a present I would cook some dinner for them instead or invite them for dinner.
That picture of yours looks very much like our American friends' home in the past although they have changed some to a less materialist way of celebrating Christmas.

When I was a child that pile of presents was what my sister and I saw on Christmas morning. They weren't expensive gifts. My parents just wanted to give us as much stuff as they could. We enjoyed opening everything.
Then when I had my daughter I did the same thing with her and continued even when she was an adult. Eventually she insisted that I stop giving her a pile of presents. Now I have to ask permission if I can give her a Christmas present. I asked this year and she said Yep.
