Marijuana legalization in Canada is happening on Oct 17th. We are close enough now that we are getting all sorts of pot related ad's on the radio and every time I hear one, no matter how many times I hear it, it still surprises me that pot is being discussed on the radio open and freely.
I was just out by the door smoking a joint. I heard my two aunts just in the road walking out, so instinctively, I scurried back in the house to make sure they didn't see me. The question is, why in the hell am I still behaving as though pot were still taboo. In my teens, I would never knowingly let a aunt see me smoking pot and it become ingrained on my brain. My generation, when we were in our teens and 20s, you still had to hide away when you smoked some pot in my small community because the general attitude was that of 1982 when pot was considered the devil's lettuce. These days, even my little community is on board for legalization.
That way of thinking is going to be harder than I thought to break, its ingrained on me. Generally when you learn something as it is when your a kid, to relearn it as something different as a adult is hard to do. The younger generation mostly came up through a world where pot was mostly accepted and part of daily life. They will naturally go with the new way of things. Its going to be those my age and older who is going to have to break the old way of thinking.

I believe the last thing the population needs is one more thing to take or inhale that will make them "feel better" and relieve "the pressure" on their daily lives.
I'm very "old school" when it comes artificial means to get happy and feel "better." If the only way the population can face the challenges of everyday life is by smoking pot, both Canada and our country are in sad shape.
What's next? Will we legalize heroin because some people need it to face the "hardships" of life.
JB....mental illness has skyrocketed in this country and the u,s....why do you think there are so many mentally ill people today?...could it be precisely because of all those pressures....not even just adults but kids too...nobody knows just how to sit still and relax anymore....I certainly think its 100 times better than a population that has to take anti-depressants to survive......

You notice sometimes that anti pot people seem to be just fine with alcohol. There are still people out there who don't acknowledge alcohol as a drug even though it has destroyed so many families and lives yet is continually celebrated in our society.
Yes...that's always my comparison too only instead of everybody getting violent and fighting with each other....everybody just shares in laughs and munchies......

Countless research confirms that in every significant way, pot is noticeably less harmful than alcohol to both yourself and society. The only harm pot has caused society was the black market because of its illegal status and Canada is finally opening its eyes and doing something about it.
Nobody goes home and beats up their wife, or starts a fight on the street after smoking a spliff. They do after alcohol. It has never killed anyone either, alcohol has. But even with that, it has to be used with respect. Overuse of any drug isn't good. People have to be able to drive, go to work, do all the regular things that people need to do in life rather than spend it in a drug-fuelled happy haze.

It's just the tactics of Julias Ceasar. Keep the people happy. Give them bread and games, only the world of today has changed it into: Give them marihuana and alcohol.
Well... as pain-killer or an epilepsy drug, why not. But please, dear pot defenders, pay attention that it will be in pill form and quite possible on prescription. What seems to be the progressive liberals fighting against establishment will result in Big Pharma increasing its profit.
Perhaps, it's time buy some more of their shares.
As an aid to deal with everyday life... A drug is a drug still. If only pro-cannabis brigade spent as much time promoting healthy life style.
You can get medical marijuana in Florida and radio advertisements are plenty. It was up for discussion on the talk show of a local Classic Rock station and the announcer said his mother has a prescription that helps her with glaucoma. When he was a teen he had to hide his drug use from her and now he buys it from her!
It's the ultimate bread and circus it really is. If you thought that politicians were all the same greedy and corrupt wait until there's a pot smoking electorate, that's going to be a real force for the powers that be to contend with I think not. Pot smoke and mirrors there's a reason why they're all stoned in North Korea

In my experience marijuana effects people differently. For some it is a pleasant experience but not for everyone. I tried it many times but I never really enjoyed the high, It made critical thinking difficult to nearly impossible. It also made me paranoid, but this could have been due to its illegal status. However I did try some legal marijuana in Alaska and still didn't like it.
My biggest concerns about marijuana are the possible effects it has on young minds. I think for some people it destroys their ambition and leads to under achieving in life. At least anecdotal personal observation of several people I have known would leave me to conclude this. It's impossible for me to say if some of the people I know that smoked a lot of pot and turned out to be slackers would have been more successful sans the pot or not, but I strongly suspect this is the case.
I have also read that legalizing pot has not reduced the black market for marijuana in Colorado. This is part due to the high taxes on legal marijuana.
I also don't like moral equivalence argument between pot and alcohol. Just because one bad thing is legal doesn't mean we need more bad things legal IMO. I'd like to hear from some of the Euro members about how the Amsterdam legal marijuana experiment has worked out...............has it been a net positive for the city or a net negative?
