I have often wondered where the Australian accent came from.

After years of research the truth comes out.

The Australian "drawl" was created from interactions between early settlers that were frequently "spiked with alcohol", claims communication expert. The distinctive Australian accent is the result of a “drunken slur” caused by the heavy drinking of the early settlers, according to a communication expert from the country.

Figures,
Ah! so where did you do your 'so called' research... I know you dreamed it... from what I have heard.. first hand it derived from the early days of colonial settlement from a cocktail of English, Irish, Aboriginal and German – before another mystery influence was slipped into the mix.
...and the so called 'mystery' influence.. is the relaxed attitude that (generally) Australians have. And mostly, only say 'haf' the word... don't want too much stress in speaking correct English.. or should I say Pome lingo... LOL ...
I really shouldn't be the spokes person of Aussie lingo, the Australian I speak is kinda different.. since English, or so called Aussie, is my second language.. and it was a London girl, who was my friend in my teens, who taught me how to speak English... and school of course. But I use the Aussie idioms that most people in other English speaking countries find... well I will call it 'charming' LOL LOL

It's the Bogans of Australia who really give English a twist.. wink
Have a G'Day...
