Closest I ever got to that was using a cutting torch when ex and I junked cars. I am crazy for cast iron and wrought iron. Be nice to make arbors and fences welded. My guy was up this week and welded the cab corners on my 49 Chevy pickup. I end up screwing metal together. Made a lawn car like an old roadster. Now am covering a wire Xmas buck deer with aluminum flashing. Course can't weld that anyway. I could weld together lawn ornaments. Make a T'rex or dragon. I wanted to learn drums. Didn't happen.
I would stay away from welding cast iron, that something only for very advanced welders to tackle. My advise is to start off with gas (Oxy Acetylene) You can weld sheet metal on up to 1/8" with no problem. anything thicker than that I would go with Arc welding, AC or DC depending on your budget. I used to build trailers for race cars so I've done a lot of welding over the years. My ex room mate used to work for a boiler repair co and there was a guy there named Mario who could weld by feel. He could weld without even being able to see the weld like between the top of a boiler and the ceiling. I knew another welder who could weld anything. He welded 2 cracked pistons in my race engine and I ran a whole season with them. He welded cracked cylinder heads all the time.
