I tend to react to unnerving situations with humour but if someone was coming at me with a machete it might be a different story

Well... if the threat comes from a gang of bandar-log, when you are returning home late and there's no one around, then yes, I might feel frightened and angry. But one-to-one, no, I wouldn't be scared. But if you feel, that someone want to harm you in some way and it's personal and persisting, collect some evidence and go to police.
