Hi guys. I’m bored. Will someone please start an interesting thread…not too heavy, not too light. C’mon…I’m cleaning the refrigerator— I would have one of those with the difficult to remove crispers and this one big shelf. It sits on the crisper drawers, has a heavy glass top that has to be carefully taken off, there’s a rod that has to be removed (you need three hands…) and the frame has more grooves than Chubby Checker, all full of crap. And crap. Well, I got it clean, perfecto. Now, to re-assemble and get back in the fridge right. Why does everything have to be so freaking hard? They can put men on The Moon and robots on Mars but they can’t make an easy to clean refrigerator!

OK I’m back. Got all through with the refrigerator. Almost filled a hefty bag with the toss-outs, old plastic containers, jars, etc…my it looks really nice, almost as if a decent person lives in this house..ha ha. Thought about you guys while working— so, many of you seem to like to talk about food. Today I had something I’d never ever had. Deep fried macaroni and cheese. Good heavens it was delicious. ( they make old fashioned macaroni and cheese, chill it, roll it into balls about the size of a kiwi fruit, dunk it in egg, roll it in cracker crumbs and then fry.) I also had a Panini. Roast beef and Monterey Jack. Very good. Ok, I can’t do all the work. Somebody add to this night gallery!!teddybear

So yesterday.....I went out and bought my first freezer grin with the way prices are going I decided I am going next month and bid on a cow. People here think I have lost it at last laugh I don't eat a lot of red meat. But I explained to my grand daughter that cow would feed me a year and two other small families. Then I baked cookies for our Valentines at work event. Soft old fashioned molasses and Almond Joy cookies. Thought I was going to fall over in a heap when done but made it to the bed. Top of the morning to you. Struggling with whether to go to church or just chill. (Still convalescing a bit from hospital stay, blah blah..) So, interesting to read your comments. My grocery bill (just food) was about $110.00 last year. I’m a very careful, frugal shopper, use coupons and watch bargain racks and bins, etc…However, this year, so far, the grocery bill is about $200.00, same products and all. Maybe I should buy a freezer and a cow, toolaugh

This seems to be a general problem with the rise of utility bills and groceries.

We notice some things are becoming more expensive and not always such good quality in some cases. Vegetables have always been top of my priority though not much of a meat eater these days . It's trying to keep a balance in what we eat to keep ourselves fit and healthy.

P.S Sorry you've been hospitalised and hope you are on the mend.teddybear

I meant to say those figures
($110 and $200) were MONTHLY. I think that’s equivalent to about 400 Pound. I’ve become quite the salad fan:

Ro’s House Salad:

4 large Romaine leaves, cleaned and veined.
5 red radishes, cleaned and thinly sliced
1 large carrot, peeled and grated.
2 or three green onions, sliced. Use all durable chive shoots, too.
4 or five fresh white mushrooms, sliced.
2 ripe tomatoes, gutted and diced.
8 or so large ripe olives, sliced.
Romano or Parmesan cheese.
Blue Cheese , crumbled
Salt, pepper, lemon

Tear Romaine into bite-size pieces. Set in deep bowl, pour juice of one large lemon over, dash with salt and pepper. Gently toss until all is coated. Drain, but save lemon liquor. Toss Romano in, blend. Except for blue cheese, add each vegetable ingredient One At A Time, gently tossing each as you add.**. Serve with blue cheese crumbles on the side.

**adding each item one at a time is far easier than trying to blend in the whole mess, trust me. It also makes a more evenly distributed dish. This salad goes well with a hearty soup or stew, or chili, with biscuits, cornbread, or Parker rolls.

They're a lot easier to clean if you do them regularly, like wiping all the shelves down before putting your groceres away.

That way any spills don't get as far as getting in all the grooves.

You should regularly check the seals for black mould as it can be a sign of listeria contamination.

Also be mindfull of food organisation to avoid cross contamination. MIne is fairly easy because I don't eat animal products, but I'm still careful to keep cooked/prepared/washed food in containers and above muddy/unwashed vegetables to avoid a dose of E,coli from soil.

The temperature should be no more than 8C, preferably 1-5C, ideally 2-3C.

To be honest Ro, I'm surprised you're still alive. giggle

On a diet as drip feed antibiotic during operation completely killed my digestive system.
Having regard to issues like "Gut Leak" eat on fatty stews to protect tummy.
I have had to judge how things come out other end very carefully.

Dinner Silver Beet and small potion meat.
Trusted friend (theater nurse) advised eat Fish every day so I eat fish'n chips for lunch, both frozen purchased from Aldi's. I use 4x4 type chest freezer called 22Below running at 18deg below.
Banana and Lactose Free yogurt breakfast + three slices home baked bread I call "Golden Crust" the following Gluten Yeast Free recipe :

My Golden Crust bread ingredients includes ground dried Gooseberry (Golden Fruit), Diced Dates, Raisins, Blueberries, Apple pieces and Longan fruits other mix fruits in Aldi's mixed nuts.
The freshly ground fruits + Aldi's mixed nuts including, Walnuts, Almond, Cashew, Brazil, Hazel, also includes Sunflower and Pumpkin seeds, Pine nuts, Goji berries, Paw Paw, other secret nuts herbs, seeds and spices, including a teaspoon apple cider vinegar, teaspoon macadamia-nut-oil (Drum 58 of course!), ¼ teaspoon of Manuka honey... 250gm "Laucke Gluten Free Easy Bakers mixed grain flour" Wheat, Yeast & Dairy Free.
I use a mixer to mix into a batter (not a dough) after weighting-out 250gm flour into the 200ml of warm water that has macadamia-nut-oil, honey and apple cider, warm water that helps to warm up the loaf and helps activate the baking soda. It rests in the per-warmed for just on 1/2 an hour as long as its mainly Laucke four other Rice flour mixes require over an hour rest until they rise about half as much greater volume than when first mixed. Been warming up the Cuisinart oven first by running its steam function for four minutes before putting the batter like mixture into and Baking Paper lined Baking Dish (no mess Charlie) so it can rest in the oven for about an 35 minutes.
I set the Cuisinart ovens bread setting so it steams for 5 minutes and all up, bakes for 35 minutes at 180 deg. Laucke easy bakers gluten yeast free Meals and Grains flour is self-rising, it has Baking Powder in it, has no yeast (the flour already has Baking soda, also known as sodium bicarbonate in it, which is widely used in baking because it has leavening properties, meaning it causes dough to rise by producing carbon dioxide)
If you can't get Laucke Gluten Yeast free or any other Gluten Yeast free self-rising flour. Like Gluten Yeast free plain flour or multigrain then you can add 12.5 g of Baking Powder to every 250g of flour.
I have been adding 1/4 teaspoon organic Moringa Leaf Powder, it is native to India, Spirulina powder (seaweed), dried Mango minced fruit and powder, dried Pineapple powder, Cherimoya (custard apple) powder.

You just put it in the microwave long enough to melt the Velveeta cheese which is already soft. Because it has a jar of salsa in it, it keeps the cooked ground beef moist. Delicious!!! cheering

That was my point.

If you reheat meat, it should be piping hot all the way through.

Hi— I have a microwave oven, and do use it, but not that much. Did you know that m.ovens don’t cook food thoroughly? There are many concerns about heating poorly, because it’s water molecules that are heated, and these are unevenly distributed in many foods. It is believed by many professional home economists that harmful bacteria, both flora and fauna, are not destroyed. Just my two bits…
