Decent_Love: Nowadays we have become so accustomed to mobile phones that it is difficult to pass a day without it. How many days can you live without mobile?
truheart1941: . It's only a phone. Not a life support system.
Actually, it is a life support system now that pay phones aren't available everywhere if your car breaks down. However, before this thing, we staff officers had walkie-talkies. The colonels called them bricks (same size and just a weight you carry around much like an anchor)--so did I. I tend to think of cellphones mostly in the same light. I do not usually take calls on it and don't give the number out.
I got a smartphone in April. Sill learning how to use the dang thing because it did not come with a how to booklet. I am saving money when buying food and drinks with the free apps like chain restaurants and 7-11. Saved over 10 dollars at 7-11 so far since downloading the app a few months ago. I also get Netflix included with my phone but have yet to sign up for it. It has 4 camera lenses, so I can take pictures and video. I have not used the video function yet but have taken many pictures with it and they come out great. Here are 2 of my favorite pictures I took with it...
Had to upgrade to 4g. And Trac says old WONT do 911 at all. I got a new flip cell. And it is a blasted smart phone. So shut off internet and everything except call and text. I use my land line and desktop. Cell is my answer to a life line. Use mainly to text a line to let someone know something. Or get a text the same. So call units and data will pile up. Weird trac system now. Used to buy 60 units. Call or text. Now get 3 separate units. 60 for calls, 60 for data, 60 for texts. So its a pain. Have to keep eye on text and not units. Answering machine died and I left it gone. If I am outside, the few people who need me can text. Carry the cell in case always. Nice to call AAA too. Otherwise...it can go for days without being used. Oh yeah..turned off at night.
Track16: Had one, used a few times, put it down, have no idea where it is now.
I've only ever had "Pay as you Go" mobile phones.Bought the phone's which are always Samsung Galaxy's. Never had a contract on any of them and never will. After reading this thread, I decided to "fire up" my old Samsung phone which had a "dare I say it?" my old vodafone Spanish sim card in it. Although I couldn't use it for calls as I didn't "top it up" and so I lost my number, It did come up with "Emergency Calls only" I have a landline phone which is incorporated with my BT Internet and is also linked to the "life line" As I said, I only use "pay as you go" on my mobile phone. I hardly use it as I much prefer my Computer and landline phone.
Decent_Love: Mobile phone is making professional life easy but making personal life complicated.
Why? What makes you blame the phone for not having a real connection to people or if you spend too much time online? It is 5 pm now and it is the first time I go online today. I worked till early afternoon and then had coffee with friends. I don't need to be on FB or Instagram, read nonsense and watch idiotic videos. Everyone is responsible for what they do with their telephone. If you need to be connected all the time to people you don't even know and live through their lives or what they show to be their life, there's something very, very wrong with you...

I think, it's possible to live without a mobile phone, but why? You'd need to get access to functions, that are gathered in one device, from many different sources.
- Telephone function can be replaced by land-line, but you are going from mobile to house-bound.
- Text and mail can be replaced by physical letters. Never mind, if it will take days and weeks, enjoy the retro charm.
- Music can be replaced by vinyl records or, if you want to be totally independent, you can sing and play some musical instrument yourself. As well as dance, if you want to replace Youtube.
- There are dictionaries in book form, you can always have a couple of those with you.
- You can see the weather forecast in the window. It'll be as today, why wouldn't it. Wet your finger and keep it up to tell the direction of wind and North is on the mossy side of a tree.
I'm sure, there is a lot of other solutions and replacements and it looks like that I'd manage. But again: what's the point?

You can switch it off when like, but these days people use them for banking documenting their family life and use lots of different apps that make "their" life easier..
