Is alcoholism a disease ? I know they say it is, but to me disease is something you have no control over, such getting cancer, where as is alcoholism, the person does have control over drinking or not drinking. no one is forcing the person to take a drink, he has a choice, but when you get cancer, you had no control over getting cancer.

Would call it more of an "addiction" or an illness than a disease

It's an escape from the painful reality of everyday life for some; it's a way of coping with stress; it's a learned behavior or reaction just like any other bad habit; if you are an alcoholic my advice would be don't buy alcohol, don't go bars, and definitely go easy on yourself when you've had a bad day; pamper yourself into feeling better.
Not that I'm an alcoholic, but you have over 5 million people who claim to be recovering from alcoholism through A.A. ,CLAIMING that it's an illness.I don't want to be the judge, but it seems hard to argue against them.I believe it's an EMOTIONAL ILLNESS,or if you will,I think alcoholics are spiritually sick.
Disease is a common term used to describe alcoholism, particularly within the program of alcoholics anonymous. I have no interest in arguing semantics at the moment. However, I would like to submit that the term disease is often favored because alcoholism is a progressive condition.
It doesn't matter if one simply chooses not to drink. The alcoholism will worsen over time whether one drinks or not. This is evidenced in person's who have relasped in alcoholism, even after many years of sobriety. It is not as if they get a fresh start with alcohol. They pick right up where they left off, often drinking themselves to oblivion. The reason is that the alcohol is a symptom of another problem. That problem is a dis-ease within the mind. Simply not drinking, does nothing to address the real problem.

I would also have to say it is more of an addiction. However simply saying someone has a choice is somewhat simplifying the issue. When someone has a severe addiction such as alcoholism it not as easy to "flip the switch" and decide not to drink. It's a learned behavior and it becomes ingrained into daily life.
The brain takes on the behavior just like any other task. take riding a bike for example, we all know how to and we are not likely to forget how. Alcoholism is the same, once the behavoir is established the brain doesn't forget, it's why many people fail to "recover". One does not recover from an addiction. One breaks the brain of the perception that it is needed.

Illness and disease are related to each other and not different in their sense. However, illness is the generic term with a connotation of lower severity while disease is the specific term which is of higher severity and sometimes of transmissible nature. Both are a condition of sickness in which the condition of the normal functioning of the living animal or plant body or of one of its parts is impaired ( specific= disease) or the body or mind is unhealthy ( general= specific).
I think until they got help for their drinking,ALCOHOLICS would drink against their will,so no,they didn't have any control until they were ready for help.
There are so many things to get addicted to. Almost all people have something that needs to be fought against to make their life better. The mind is drawn into something and the mind lets the body indulge....then the body adapts to the thing the mind allows. When the mind no longer wants to allow it.....the body is weak and the mind cannot control the body. Some are habits and some are additions. A person has to fight many tiny battles with sucess to ever overcome a habit or addiction. The mind must be strong enough to stop the body and give the body a chance to adjust. Most people try too much too fast without the resolve to make it.
The mind also gets addicted to things and it is the same process to stop an bad habit or addiction. But the mind needs a new thing in its place or the mind has place for another addiction to step in. Replace bad with a new good.
It is a hard thing to control ones self and body without knowing the mechanics of the body and mind. It is just plain not easy sometimes and I judge no one in their struggle......at least they know their struggle. So many never see their need to change.
But, my opinion doesn't really amount to jack squat because I've never been in their boots. Been kicked by them though and I know it hurts. And sometimes it hurts the one kicking as much as the one kicked.
Disease, addiction, mental illness, whatever...
I'm just joyous for the ones who got their enlightenment.
constanza: You've tried and liked it and continued in an exagerrated fashion with the wrong motivation behind it; it's like overeating; like drug use, although with drugs I personally feel there is no reason to try it at all unless it's for medical reasons and temporarily. But with food and alcohol, some lose perspective, and become preoccupied, consumed
Ahhhh! You meant it's their own learned behaviour ... I misunderstood ... thought you meant learned behaviour from others around them ...
